I had the same problem with my 08 SG, and I ended up having my seat modified. I sent it to Allen at Mean City Cycles, and he modified the seat to push me forward about an inch or so. Of course, the memory foam under my toosh made all the difference too. That extra inch was all it took, and it's an inexpensive mod. Mean City Cycles is one of the sponsors on the forum. Talk to Allen and see if he can help you out. He's a great guy, and their customer service is excellent.
I am 5'7" so I had the same problem with my 07 Ultra. I did the same thing that HDMomma did. I had Allen to lower my seat 2 inches, move me forward 1 1/2 inches, cut the sides to get my feet on the ground, and add memory foam. I think it was $110 plus shipping both ways. I got my seat back in 5 days. The memory foam was worth the effort but the added not having to reach for the bars and get my feet on the ground was a big extra +
A couple of my friends have put the heritage softail bars on their road glides and they love it as it puts the bars closer to the seat or closer to the rider.
Wild 1 518s are what I will get if I finally decide against apes. Regardless, MoCo hasn't put out cables longer than stock for the ABS and brakes. As soon as they do I'm upgrading from stock bars. There's some non-MoCo solutions out there so look around.
Shrimp: In some cases a new seat works, in others it'll take new bars...or it may take a combination of both. How do you like the seat you're currently sitting on? Do you think the dealer would let you try a couple other seats without having to buy one? I think a couple of other riders have already suggested a couple alternatives for seats. Follow up on them.
Regarding your bars; call the tech's at Wild 1's.The pain you described is the same that I had at one time soI called Wild 1 and we talked for about an hour about all my options. Having a real live, knowledgable person on the other end of the linewas part of the great service they gave me. Even though I switched and have Wild 1 518's on my bike I find that the same pain comes and goes depending on which of my three seats I have on theRoad Kingat the time. MyMustang solodoesn't give as much lower back support as my HD Sundowner Touring seat....thus, I get tiredfasterwith the solo seat. My point here is that either the seat or the bars make all the difference so it pays to shop wisely.
Thanks everyone for the helpful suggestions. Just did a search on handlebars and found more than I ever wanted to know. It is a relief that I am not the only rider who has had this issue. Took the scoot out this afternoon just to make sure I was not imagining things and sure enough, the problem is still there. I have some decisions to make on the seat and bars. Love the bike though. Happy riding!
