I traded my superglide last august and went with a Road King, for the simple fact I can add a fairing later (dragonfly or Dead center) and can still go face to the wind without it, also the king all stripped down is the best looking H-D Period.

The Road King is the most vesitile bike HD makes. I had an Ultra, its a great bike, but I still like wind in my face sometimes. So the RK is the bike of choice for me, you can always add all the luggage and fairings down the road, and make it whatever bike you want. Oh and the RK is the ONLY tourer that you can do this with.

flea402: Having ridden both bikes, I prefer the SG. They are equally nimble in handling. The batwing offers the gauges and wind protection along with radio options. It is whatever you prefer.

Both are great motorcycles.

I like the RK. I just am not a fairing kind of guy. I had an Ultra and it was a great bike but I always felt like I missed the, to me, Harley feel. I don't need a radio or music when on a trip on the bike. In a car, yes. But not when riding.

I have not had my RK but a couple of months and I may decide it is too smooth and civilized for me, but I doubt it. I like feeling the breeze in my hair and on my arms and I like being able to see everything in front of me when riding. The SG is maybe the best looking Harley today but I like the wide open spaces and a fairing is a little too much for me.

As far as protection from the weather, a windshield and proper attire is all that you need. I have ridden in all kinds of weather and have never wished that I had a fairing.

Riding two up you can pack just as much on a RK as a SG or Ultra.

If you liked your Superglide than I think you will really like the RK.

+1...........While I have had no ultra. I'm just about ready to order a detachable fairing for the rkc. Bought hard bags on ebay and tour pack will come also. It's all about versatility for me. The SG is a cool look and you should ride both before a decision is made. But being able to completely change the look of a bike in amatter of minutes is pretty cool also.

Having owned both....07 SG and now an 08 RK. The RK is for me. I love this bike....only thing is I had to put shorter shocks to make it ride/sit like the SG. Got then on today and went for a short hop of 300 miles on all kinds of roads......fell in love. The stock RK seat is the very first stock seat that actually works for me. Fixing to do a 6K road trip in two weeks and we shall see how that torture test works out....right now that future looks bright.

They are all fine machines, but what are your needs? How many miles do you intend to run in a day routinely? Over 350? Are you going to ride two-up a lot? If so then look hard at the Ultra. It has an intercom which the wife and I truly enjoy. Also the CB is right handy when riding with others that have one too. It comes with a comfortable two-up seat. The RG does not.
How much do you or you and your passenger weigh? If you weigh over 225 or you and passenger with gear are near max load then again look hard at the Ultra or Road King. I say this because I weigh 250 and rode a RK Custom as a second bike for about a year before trading it on my 08 RK. I traded it because (just like the Street Glide) the stock suspension has over an inch less travel in the forks and rear. At max load the ride was literally miserable for myself and the wife. Even solo I found the bottom many at time and even aired up and straight up it often dragged the frame over parking lot speed bumps. Did a bit of floorboard dragging in the turns too that doesn't happen with the 08 RK standard nor the Ultra. That lowered suspension near beat my 250 lb **** to death at times.

All that said, if you are not interested in fm radios, cb radios, cd players and intercoms, then save some money and buy the Road King. It handles better than either of the others, still provides good wind protection (that is easily removable), is available in your preference of hard or soft bags, and if you want you can still add an easy on and off tourpak. The RK has the same suspension as the Ultra and a decent stock two-up seat on the 08. The Rk is very versatile and I believe one of Harley's largest sellers for several years now.
