Talked with the guys from Thunder Max today and wanted the forums opinion, on what they said.
I was getting pretty good MPG when it came stock, made a couple of mods and MAPed to Stage I, and MPG sucks now.
I know that the Stage I made me run richer to keep the heat down, but the guy from T-max said that the Stock A/F ratio was actually bad for the engines. Even stock they ran too lean. I find that hard to believe, but wanted another opinion.
I am looking to get a programmer to get a happy medium between, stock MAP and Stage I MAP to get my mileage back into semi decent MPG.
I get close to 40 with a 107 build, Bub TD with Crossover, and a SERT tune by a guy who knows what he is doing. I think I was closer to 42 at last check. I'm not hard on it and kind of ease the gas unless I feel like rocking my head back... What is your mpg?
I am playing at around 37 mpg. Not too hard on it, cruise control at 75 on the hwy, 130 miles a day commute. I have Reinhard S/O, and SE Stage I air cleaner and the Stage I re-Mapp.
Hell I will go back to stock air cleaner and stock Map to get back to 44-45 MPG?!?!?!
I could not get the techs to admit that they set up the motor a bit rich until my first 1000 mile check up. I have the stage one and the V&H big shot duals on my 08 Ultra I asked them about it but they said nothing about it. The only thing I could say for sure is this I used a 1/4 of a tank less fuel coming home. So there you are.
Yes they are running lean! Many articles have been writtenin American Rider and American Iron magazines. It's the nature of the beast being a air cooled motor trying to meet or stay ahead of the EPA. A oil cooler definitely is a help....most people haven't improved the heat situation using synthetic oils either. Yes, remapping does get rid of some of the heat in the combustion chamber, but mileage suffers. I haveputSE slip-ons on my 07 FLHX and a oil cooler. I do love the mileage though...47-48 mpg's riding adult like using 6th gear @ 2000 rpms and up on highways. Yes riding 55-65 on 2 lanes and 72-75 on 4 lanes. Mieage would be less with remapping as you well know, and would probably be better on the heat situation....There you have it, you decide. Last your mileage shouldn't be that bad with remapping, 6-10 mpg's less?
