MOBY ,,,,,,

you are doing the same thing and making the same mistake that many customers make installing the J&M speakers,,,, in your Ultra ,,,,,

REMOVE the stock Harley speaker from the plastic spacer and install the New Hogtunes speaker into the plastic spacer in the same manner as the stock speaker was installed into the spacer ,,,,,,, then put them back in ,,,,,,

also ,, pay atttention to the wire spade placement position so that the speaker wires reach and attach correctly ,,,,

Thank you John. The instructions I received never mentioned anything about removing the speaker from the plastic frame. I checked once and didn't find any adaptor; but after re-reading your post I checked again and found that I could remove the stock speaker from its plastic frame and use the frame on the new speakers. The instructions could be more clearer for slower people like me. Thanks again.

Yes, you will need the spacers--"speaker adapters" in Harley-speak. I've read that EG Standards come with speaker adapters even though the Standard doesn't come with speakers--but I have alsoread otherwise. If you look, you will see a horizontal bracket connecting the black fairing bracket on one end to a screw at the speaker hole end. If you have the plastic adapter, the screw will be threaded into the adapter securing the horizontal bracket; if the screw is directly into the inner fairing, then you will need to buy speaker adapters. The part number is in a post above.

Moby: Do yourself a favor and buy the HD Service Manual for your bike. Speaker replacement is clearly explained in it. I'm pretty ignorant when it comes to my bike and find the SM is a life/dollar saver many times over its cost.

No problem with speakers even the lowers speakers were a breeze. Sorry for your difficulty. But once completed they do sound nice.

Hi Jerry
Sorry this has happenned. I write the manuals myself, and went back to 3x check and here is whats written
Step #3: Take the 2 wires off each speaker by gently pulling one at a time.
Undo the screws that attach each speaker/grill assembly to the inner fairing
and remove. Gently pull the stock speaker out of each grill assembly.
Step #4: “Clip” the Hogtunes speaker into each grill assembly. Position
your new speaker/grill assembly onto the inner fairing, and re-attach each
one using the OE screws. A hand screwdriver is recommended for this step.

I cant change whats happened to you, so all I can do is my best to make sure this doesnt happen to anyone else. Last thing I want is to sound coy, but if you could explain where this went wrong for you, I can look at altering future manuals.........if you want to email me, my addy is info@hogtunes.com

I have the service manual and the parts manual; but I never consulted them because with the outer fairing removed the speaker replacement looked very easy. The thing is, I removed the stock speaker and tried installing the HogTunes speaker, when the screw broke, I removed the HogTunes. If I had looked at the inner fairing with the HogTunes in place, I would have noticed there was no speaker cover and that would have been the clue I was doing something wrong. Anyway, thanks to the help from the Forum I got educated and after I get another screw the completing the project should be very easy.

Pez,

The instructions are clear as written if the reader understands that the grill assembly is separate from the inner fairing. When I started this project, I had the misconception that the grill was part of the inner fairing. I should have realized this was wrong when I had a big hole in the fairing after removing the stock speaker. Nevertheless, the project seemed so simple that I went with my idea of how to do the swap and fit the instructions to my preconceived notion.

"Undo the screws that attach each speaker/grill assembly to the inner fairing
and remove." I interpreted this as the speaker and grill assembly were synonyms (obviously wrong on my part) and the "and remove" referred to the screws.

"Gently pull the stock speaker out of each grill assembly." I thought this referred to removing the stock speaker from the front fairing.

“Clip” the Hogtunes speaker into each grill assembly." I didn't know exactly what the "clip" meant since I hadn't removed the stock speaker from the grill assembly but figured the whole sentence referred to putting the speaker up to the fairing.

I hope this helps explain how I misinterpreted the instructions. If you have any questions, feel free to e-mail me.

Anyway, I got the front and rear speakers installed and they sound fine. When I first turned on the radio I got a lot of static; but then noticed I was on an AM channel. After changing to FM or XM the static went away and the sound was good. I haven't tried them on the road yet but will tomorrow.
