Default tire repair

Found a very small nail in my tire today, like a 1" brad. It is about an inch inside from the outer edge of the tire. I was wondering if I could plug it, or if I should get it patched. Or if I should get a new tire. It's brand new with less that 200 miles on it and I am dreading having pay the labor to get it fixed! Any thoughts? Can I get away with the plug?

Pull nail, if it leaks, scrap the tire.

From Dunlop's web site:

Some punctures in motorcycle tires can be repaired if no other damage is present. Dunlop recommends only individual permanent plug-patch repairs of small tread area punctures from within the demounted tire by a qualified tire repair shop or motorcycle dealer. Never perform an exterior repair and never use an innertube as a substitute for a proper repair. Your bike should not exceed 50 mph for the first 24 hours after the repair and the repaired tire should never be used over 80 mph. Dunlop speed ratings are voided by repairs.

No form of temporary repair should be attempted because secondary damage caused by the penetrating object may not be detected and tire or tube deflation may occur at a later date.

Dunlop does not recommend the use of liquid sealants. These are a form of temporary repair that may adversely affect ply material and mask secondary damage caused by the penetrating object. Reliance upon sealants can result in sudden tire failure and accident.

I just picked up a nail in a new Metzler with only 200 miles. The Indy shop I took it to said that legaly he was not allowed to plug it so he put a tube in. Is a tube better than a plug?

Yeah, I'd like to hold out till I get home to FL. The dealer up here in GA is not too competent from what I have seen done on my buddies bikes. Thanks for the info! I plugged it tonight and am going to keep an eye on the pressure to see if it holds. I'll order a new tire and put it on when I get to the house.

There is no way in hell I would ride a motorcycle on the asphalt with a plugged tire. I'd much rather pay a couple of hundred dollars for a new tire than I would deal with the consequences of a tire failure.

Tire repair on a cycle, should always be repaired from the inside. A plug is an adequate short term fix. To instead, replace the tire, is an individual decision. I have been advised to always replace vs repair, but again, this is your decision. Patching to me, is the better option. That is if there is no structural damage.

I was in a tire shop a few years ago and had a tire fixed. They used a patch that had a plug built into it, kinda looked like a tiny umbrella. plug went in tire and the patch glued to the inside. Haven't seen them since that day.

My feelings exactly. The only time I'll ride on a repaired tire is to get home or to some other place where I can replace it.
