I bought a 550 this spring and it came with the 2008 version of the Map software. Tonite I thought I would check for software and firmware updates from Garmin. They had a free download available to me of the new 2009 Map software. I am in the process of installing the new software now.
WARNING: It is a 2gb download, so no dial-up connections allowed. If you are eligible for the free software upgrade, I read that they will mail a disk for a $10 shipping fee. I have 8Mb cable internet, and it took about 30 minutes to download.
Hint: while installing the new software, it asks for a Product Key. The key is on the Garmin site. Go to your account, then \myMaps\Map Downloads to find the key. It took me several minutes of searching their support site to find this info.
Good luck, just trying to pass along helpful info. BUT, if you have problems, contact Garmin as I am an everyday Zumo owner and don't know any more than I have posted here.
yep, just bought the 2009 update,i went with the hardcopy {CD},,got it in 3days,,,fast shippers those garmin mappers gps'ers dont get lost folks.....Howell3
Thanks for the info. I bought a Zumo from PC Nation that's suppose to be here tomorrow or Wed. Just in time to see if I need to do the upload you found. I leave Sat. for a 7 day trip through the smokies - gonna ride the dragon's tail.
@ morif: Sorry for the confusion, it is the City Navigator North America NT 2009 that I was talking about above, which is the Map software.
Although, they also had a operating system update available that I also downloaded and installed. The latest system software is Ver. 4.20. To see which version of software operating system you have on a 550, go to Tools\System\About. It will show the software rev on the screen. To complete any of the downloads, you must have registered with Garmin and have your Zumo connected to your computer.
@ jamesrgarner: My buddies and I went last fall to the tail. My first trip there. There is a chance we may go again this weekend, just on a one nite trip. We only live about 4 hours away in southern KY. If you see a Vivid Black and Lava Red Sunglow Ultra with a Zumo on the handlebars, say hello.
Thanks 04Ultra! I hadn't picked this one up yet. I bought my Zumo in January '08 and looks like the upgrade will cost me a bit. Looks like a good evening for a download!
During the upgrade process, did your custom POI's and routes get erased from the Zumo unit?

RE: Zumo 2009 Map Update
I ordered the download version of the 2009 map update last week, but the download links they sent me were corrupted and I couldn't download the file no matter what I tried (2 different computers/3 different browsers). I finally gave up and called Garmin customer service. I give them a triple A rating because as soon as I explained my problem to them, they offered to send me the CD version at no additional cost. I got it in mail a couple of days later and transferred it to my zumo 550. One point to mention; Garmin didn't seem too surprised that I couldn't download the file so I suspect the problem I ran into is a fairly common one.
