... that are so easy to pull out... Anyone know the best stuff to use to glue them back in? Or should I just take it back to the dealer and ****&moan till they fix it... they're junk! I pulled the top center insert and wasn't even tightening the screw up... HD should have better sense than to attach the inner and outer fairings this way.
Phil, if you're talking about the windscreen brass inserts, they're junk. I use automotive trim glue to hold mine in place, can't remember the name, but it's a blue epoxy glue. I'm sure it's available at you local paint shop. Mine were always coming loose because I change my screen from shorty (weekdays) to midsize, (going to the cottage) to high, (roadtrips) every week. If they don't have it I can send you a tube.
Mac, for me it's just a time thing, 4 year old bike, 30 weeks a year, 2-3 changes a week, the plastic gets worn. I ride more than most, so I'm used to having to fix things that most people don't.
Two of mine popped out on the way home from the dealer. (Gotta love it) I used JB weld two part epoxy (Home depot, Ace, Lowes) on the brass fittings then I used a plastic hammer to carefully drive the brass fittings back in the fairing, waited over night then snugged the screws in with no problem. Don't over tighten! You will need to to also purchase some blue Loctite for the screws and every other nut or bolt on the bike. I spent over two hours tightning loose nuts and bolts on my ultra and securing them with the blue Loctite.
Also, I don't think these screws will have a torque spec, just snug. 13 foot pounds (156 inch pounds) will rip them out, damage the fairing and/or break the screw.
Another JB weld fan here too..... Remember the Loctite Blue will hold the screw where you left it (tightness wise), therefor overtightening is not necessary... In 99% of the cases, you are hamfisting a light fastener to pop the brass nuts.
