oil cooler question??
We all know our motors are air cooled. What many don't know is that they are also oil cooled. What I mean is that the pistons are cooled by spraying oil on them from underneath. By doing this, HD is able to increase combustion temps in order to burn off emissions and pass EPA. The oil spray cools the pistons so they aren't destroyed by the heat. They also coat the pistons skirts with teflon so they (hopefully) won't gall into the cylinder walls.
The negative is that oil temps go very high . . . dangerously high IMO. This is why I run synthetic oil and an oil cooler.
The big question is whether a stock engine is perfectly fine and will last 100K. I have my doubts. This is the main reason I did a stage 1 upgrade. Cooler running engine = longer life.
PS - I'm one of those guys that will ride it until the wheels fall off. My goal is at least 100K.
My '06 EG Classic looks like it came stock with an oil cooler. What are you guys talking about?
Yours was probably added at the dealer.
While we're on the subject, I added one to my 07 Road Glide. My oil temps are running right around 190 although I expect higher temps this summer. Seems to be running at least 30 degrees cooler than before the install.
IMO, our bikes should come from the factory with an oil cooler.
Can someone post a picture so I can tell if I am mistaking my rectifier for a cooler?
