After seeing a few pictures of painted inner fairings, I want mine painted on my 06 Ultra.
Is there a lot of complicated things to do or is it fairley simple to remove the fairing inner?
ITs very do-able, but kind of a pain, outer fairing has to come off and then all the gages detached. this gets difficultwith all the wiring, but you can definently do it at home, jsut make sure you keep track of your wiring. When a buddy and i did it last time i think it took about 2 hours, a little longer to put back together ( that time may have included a few beers) good luck!
It's not complicated, but very time consuming. Do you have a manual?
I did mine this winter, and the only thing I suggest other than the manual's instructions is to label every wire. Take a look at my photo gallery to see what she looks like apart.
I also wanted a painted inner - What I did was call Chicago Harley 888-338-6868 (Sue internet sales) 20% off HD list, no sales tax and No shipping (very small handling fee). I bought a spare inner faring and then had it painted and did the swap in the same day... Much easier to remember where all the shi** goes if I do it the same day... get your self a Service manual if you do not already have one... it is not hard but it does take time and patients.... If you do not want to have yours painted, you can buy one done by HD - I save a bunch by having my painted glass black and I love it....
I'd do the swap as well, though you can find inner fairings all over ebay for a lot less than buying a new one. Even at 20% off. DOn't forget to get the fairing cap as well.
after you take the outer fairing off shoot some digital photos of the wire harness/ radio/ gauge setup... make it easier to put back together when you can look at the photos
Just finished mine, did the switches, controls, levers and Wild Ones Chubbys 575 bars. Lots of fun, lots of time, but pretty straightforward . Just take your time and it's well worth the effort.
Now for braided clutch and throttle cables and I'll be done, ...er I mean broke!
Not real good pictures but it is winter outside, I'll get better ones when it's nicer out!
