Mileage test
Last weekend I set out to see what kind of mileage and tank range I could get on my 08 Ultra. Riding east of Burney CA towards Alturas, Cedarville and Gerlach NV I was able to get 257 miles out of the 6 gallon tank with .8 of a gallon left. I also got 49.4 miles to the gallon. I was riding fairly soft and didn't go over 70 mph. I am amazed at these numbers from such a big bike.
MikeB: That is excellent mileage. How many miles do you curently have on your 08 Ultra? I have under 3500 on my 08 FLHR and best I've done is 41 mpg with same mods. Worst was 30 mpg last weekend at 65 mph with 20-30 mph winds evengusting higher. I felt like a kite! Good for you on you mpg.
That's about the upper end of what the TC96 can get, IMO. My '07 SG can manage 50mpg, but not much more, on easy backroads riding--lower in city. No amount of further tweaking will realize better mileage on this bike, so I think I'm at my limit. Last week I got 50mpg going to Gulfport, MS on the backroads, 45mpg on the return trip via I-10 with a moderate headwind and ~70mph cruising speed. I was very happy with that.
A friend in Lafayette, LA says he's gotten 50mpg on his '08 Ultra, which is stock, so it is certainly doable. If you are running closed-loop without the 14.2:1 change via SERT, you are running 14.7:1 in the cruise range with or without the Stage 1 download. This is most of the reason for good mileage on stock bikes, but usually this means more heat, as the A/F in closed-loop mode is very lean.
I have the PCIII with a map obtained from Fuel Moto that has been tweaked for mileage, Rush with FM custom baffles, and K&N AC. There are quite a few threads already here that discuss increasing mileage with the PCIII, and the same techniques would work with SERT.

I've been getting 30-35 mpg. Now at 4K I've gotten 40 mpg on the last two tanks with a mix of in-town, freeway, and twisty coast range roads with no restraint on the throttle.
