Default True Duals vs Stock Crossover

When I get ready for high flow air and ECM upgrade, should I change the headers to true duals or leave the stock headers on? I've already got V&H Ovals installed. I know that a 2to1 (e.g. V&H Pro Pipe) is the best but I just like the rear end with dual pipes. I've heard that true duals don't deliver the performance like a crossover system. Let meknow what you think. Thanks.

I just added the Vance & Hines dresser duals to my Ultra Classic and I cant really notice any difference with the power. I too had the V&H ovals on my Ultra but the heat was klling me. The sound is better, not too loud and most of the heat on the right side is gone.
I wish I would have but the dresser duals on sooner.

The stock system directs most of the exhaust out the right side. Check for yourself by putting your hand over each muffler outlet and compare. This along with the location of the RH pipe makes it really hot on your right leg. I went to true duals for that reason . . . heat on my leg.

Yes, the stock system helps with low end torque. I can't notice the difference.

My bike sounds better with stereo sound and the exhaust system is cooler. Along with the Stage 1 and oil cooler, my bike is running much cooler than stock. Keep in mind the heat issue is twofold. 1. engine oil temp 2. felt heat for the rider and passenger. True duals help with #2 but do nothing for #1.

Just my opinions and personal experience.

Will true duals require a change in air/fuel?

I wold stick with the cross over. Everything I've read on this, suggest the cross over is a very good design.

My bike came with the "Y" pipe. However for the pastsix years I have been running one or another variation of TDs, Rineharts, Hooker, and TCC Conversion Kit. Yes heat was an issue, but when I went TD, the heat suddenly appeared on the left side, who'da thunk that? I didn't like the Rineharts because with my mild build I found them too loud. For the most partI found all the TDs to be louder, your expereince may vary. The Hookers ran so close to the bike that it toasted my side cover. That's why I went with a conversion kit, to keep the OEM clearances. On the subject of HP/TQ, my butt dyno could not tell the difference between any of them, honestly.

Finally,in my "old age" I just gottired of all that noise. It took it's toll on long tours. SoI went back to the "Y" pipe. I like it and so does the bike, LOL!. As for the heat, well most of that has been tuned out with a better afr, and RJs heat deflectors make a big difference too. In myexperience the only reason to get TDs is the look and the sound. The heat can be dealt with other ways.

I doubt that many riders would notice the difference in performance on a stock motor bagger using either the crossover or true duals--I know I can't.

Cosmetically, I much prefer the look of the bike on the right side without the crossover pipe--but I don't spend a lot of time looking at my bike (now that I've owned it for 3+ years).

And eliminating the crossover pipe definitely made for more comfortable riding in city/heavy suburban traffic in Metro Atlanta during the Summer.

Did you get your RJ heat shields yet?

I would agree that on stock or nearly stock motors, there is no performance reason to get away from the stock system. You don't have the motor to utilize the extra flow.
Looks maybe and heat on the legs, maybe. I would disagree that TD's won't help with engine heat. If putting on a SERT with an air cleaner and TD's, the rear cylinder can be tuned seperately and cooled down. The entire engine will run cooler as it can be tuned to run richer. However, this could be done with the stock system too. It can likely be tuned a little richer with the TD's than the stock system.
For most bikes, the stock system will provide a broader more useable power band.
Contrary to what you hear around here, the stock pipes will do just fine. If you like the looks or sound of another system, fine. But you will not gain much with TD's or 2 into 1 on a stock bike. I know there will be a bunch of dyno sheet waving, seat of the pants braggin' dudes that will disagree but it's my story and I'm stickin' to it. LOL I have spent much time, energy and money proving this to myself. Dyno sheets DO lie at times and seat of the pants is influenced by the money spent.

I run a 2into1 D&D Fat Cat system with the ghost pipe. So....I have the performance, sound and balanced look, a win win in my eyes. Check it out:
