sounds like a grinding coming from the primary....but only when i roll the bike to a certain area, i mean i can roll it and no sound, but i roll it a little more (either forward or backward), there is the noise...i roll a little more, noise gone...when i'm at the noisy "spot", i pull the clutch in and still have the noise...when i put her in 1st, noise goes away...i've changed all fluids, Amsoil always...i changed the primary to HD Syn thinking maybe i was too slick, noise is still there...hmmmm???
clutch, tranny?...bike rides fine, but i know something is up...my indy gives me a strange look and thinks maybe a bearing...any ideas on what it could be?
Ever took the inspection cover off on the 03 model and checked the tension on the primary chain. Have you got a manual on the bike ? Was any metal in the primary oil when you drained it.
Not a hard job to change out the bearing if that's what it is. Give ya a chance to check out things like wear on the tensioner shoe, chain slack, lube the shifter, etc. all while you have the primary open too.
Just had the same noise myself. Took it to the dealership to see what they said. As I pulled in the mechanic was standing outside andimmediately said " sounds like your compensating sprocket is about to come off" Babied it home and pulled the primary cover, sure enough, the compensating sprocket nut was 2 turns from falling off. It's an easy fix. 165 ft.lbs.and red locktite.Take care of it before it comes off and shears the splines on your crankshaft. That's a big fix.
I had the exact same problem as nb472 on my '03. Not a hard fix, but one that surprised me. My bike only had about 8k miles on it at the time. The noise was the nut hitting the outer primary cover.1 1/2" iirc, and like nb472 said - 165ft lbs and red loctite.
