I've been seeing a lot of posts lately about folks getting low MPG. On page 4-2 of my '03 shop manual, the very first items under Fuel System Troubleshooting (carbureted) in the Poor Fuel Economy section:
Check for:
1. High speed riding style.
2. Excessive use of enrichener system.
Remedy:
1. Modify riding habits.
2. Limit system use.
Well, there it is, straight from H-D in their official shop manual. The top 2 items to look for are the rider's fault. Thank you H-D.
I'm surprised that under Poor Acceleration they didn't put "Rider fails to open throttle enough."
I figured with all the stress about rising fuel prices we could all use a laugh. Didn't think I'd find it in the shop manual though!
Very helpful information. It would have been just as useful for the manual to recommend putting the bike on a trailer. lol. If anyone finds a good deal on a "modified riding style," please shoot me a pm because I have been looking everywhere for one.
Not to be an off topic contrarian here but I don't understand why riders are getting poor mileage. I have a Stage 1 with SEAC and SE slip-ons, ride fairly hard, and get 43-44 mpg consistently. About the same as on my Evo. Just sayin'.
