Default What would you have done?

I met this mechanic at the HD Dealership and being in the right circle I learned he does work at his house and he lives right around the corner from me. He has done 2 services to my bike saving me so far around $250. Plus he goes the extra mile to check other small stuff and when it’s mandatory that I go to the dealership (dyno or for special tools he doesn’t have, etc) he talks to his Manager and they give me a brake on hours that they would charge someone else. Not to mention when I had issues with my PC III and had to ship it to dynojet and should have been down around a month he slipped me a stage I download free! Well, last night after an oil change he was sitting on my bike talking about handle bars. As he got off, he thought the kick stand was down and………[]

It wasn’t a hard fall by any means, and I know I have almost done this about 3 times in the 9 months I have owned the bike. But this is my baby! The fist bike I have ever owned. It scuffed the two crash bars slightly and he said he can replace them no problem. I wanted to cuss and holler but my pocket book said “shut up you fool!”

What would you have done?

You handled it well. The guy is risking his job by doing the work for you. The dealer would fire him if he found out. Let him make it good and move on. It happens, even in dealerships. I've seen techs drop bikes before.

I agree with terry1955 let it go, If he say's he will fix it, no harm done. I'd just laugh it off.
The both of you will end up laughing about this years down the road.

I agree. You are getting a deal and the guy could lose his job if the dealer found out.

The good thing is he is willing to make it right.

You take a chance when you get someone to do work on the side.

Sounds like you have a good mech.

My Dad used to do side work all the time, he was a plumber. I remember one job where I was helping him and he got paid with two chickens. Live chickens! What the heck were we going to do with two live chickens? Well my Dad was a old farm boy and I found out what were going to do with two live chickens. <WHOP!><PLUCK!> Clean and Fry.
Tastey.

Well being he’s practically a neighbor and sounds more like a friend than just a guy who works on your bike I probably would have split the cost of the new parts with him. I’m sure he felt terrible about what happened. I would have asked if he could get these parts from the dealership for close to cost and then told him I would pony up half if he had the other half. Sure he dropped it and it wasn’t your fault at all but it was an accident and the guy was helping you when it happened.
