You are right to be upset. Remember you are the only one responsible for your own safety. DROP out of the group and follow at a safe distance, or go your own way. Group rides are dangerous for the simple fact that you are a group and options to avoid a hazard are complicated enough with out having idiots thrown into the mix. You have enough in a righteous group ride to keep you busy!
In over 40 years of riding there are less than five people I would trust to be within 20 feet of me and one of those is my wife. I will only ride with a "Group" if it is well planned, the rules outlined and followed. The Road Captain is some one I know personally and knows his stuff and the people in the group are ones that I am at least familiar with there riding skills.
Even riding with my wife, we go over the route and what to do if hazards occur and how each of us will react in in relation to the other bike and the hazardin given situations. I live in Oregon and the wild life here can present some real hairy situations and this has saved us from putting down a bike many times over.
YOUR SAFETY FIRST!
You are completely justified. If it happens again, with your left hand, tap on top of your helmet and point to where you want to go [signaling to the group] and leave the group immediately. Pull off the side of the road and let the two dumb ***'s do their thing. your safety and the safety of the others is most important when riding in a group.
The RC or the Sweep should have pulled them. Hopefully to gave the organizers a heads up that their insurance for the ride nearly went through the roof. Even though you usually sign a waver, someone has to carry some for these type of events. If that did'nt work...well, a good swift kick in the nuts would have worked finefor the bonehead riders. You probably would've got some help from eveyone else as well.
I always enjoy the AHoles who decided to pass an entire group of 20-30 riders because they're in a big *** hurry. Every right to be pissed in your situation and I've peeled away from a group for the same reason!
I woulda cut away from the group. In fact, I've left groups because of idiots like that.
If people wanna ride like dumbasses and put their own lives at risk, that's fine. Thegene pool could use a little thinning out.But when they start endangering MY life, or my friends? To hell with 'em. I'm out.
But first I would inform the RC of their antics and see what (if any) action would be taken to cull that behavior. If not resolved to my satisfaction..../POOF! Color me gone.
