We were on a charity ride this past weekend and ended up in the middle of a group of about 20-30 bikes. The two guys in front of us were constantly weaving across the lane, standing on the pegs and "flying" down the road with both hands off the bars. The one guy almost laid his bike down doing this because we came up on a blind stop sign. I'm all for having fun while riding, but the fact that these two were doing in in the middle of a large group, who didn't know each other or the riding habits/skills of the others, kinda pissed me off. Probably more so because if they went down, I may go down too trying to avoiding running them over. Am I just overreacting or were these two guys just stupid?
I woulda cut away from the group. In fact, I've left groups because of idiots like that.
If people wanna ride like dumbasses and put their own lives at risk, that's fine. The gene pool could use a little thinning out. But when they start endangering MY life, or my friends? To hell with 'em. I'm out.
But first I would inform the RC of their antics and see what (if any) action would be taken to cull that behavior. If not resolved to my satisfaction..../POOF! Color me gone.
If it was an organized ride the ride captain should have kicked them out at the first stop. If it was more loosely organized, I would have immedately split off from the group and gone on my own ride, but would have made it a point to let the the organizers know why. I don't do too many group rides exactly for this reason.
I do and put up with alot when I am with a group of riders I have known for a long time and am confident of their riding skills and habits. But in this case, where you didn't know these guys, I would have put some space between myself and them. I see no need to get pissed off about it, just get away from the danger. To each his own.
I have been in similar circumstances and simply turned off at the nearest opportunity. That's a recipe for a ten bike pileup right there. That's why there should be ride captains and detailed instructions.
Some people were never taught and/or are to stupid to figure out how to ride in a group. They should have been kicked off the ride. I like to ride in groups when it is people I know but it is not comfortable or safe sometimes on the large rides when people don't know how to group ride. Sounds like it was time for you to let the rc know what was happening and go out on your own ride.
