Default Speedometer Problem

I took a trip on my 2001 RK FLHPI to Oklahoma today and on the way home my speedometer needle started jumpingaround. I was doing about 75 when the needledropped down to 45 and then jumped back up to 75. It stayed at 75 for a while and thendropped back to 45, then 35, and then jumped back up to 75. After doing this continuously for several miles the needle dropped tozero and stayed there. My odometerdisplays 27355 buthasn't changed since the needle dropped to zero. The tripometer doesn't change either. Has my speed sensor gone bad? Is it something else? Have any of you had a similar problem and how expensive is it to fix? I'm headed to Texas this weekend; can the fix wait? Help me out guys.

Sensor 65.00...then speedo 300..plus. One or the other more than likely. Good luck.

Speedo sensor is a magnet. Try cleaning the metal shavings that are likely stuck to it and see if that helps. I did this a while back on my 01 Ultra, then sometime after it quit working and I had to replace the sensor.

Before you spend the dough on the speedo sensor, get yourself a cheap can of electrical connector cleaner. Take the deutch plug apart that runs from the speedo wiringconnecting the speedo wiring to the main harness and spray the bajeebers out of both the male and female parts of this connector plug. Let it dry for a minute or so, re-connect the plug and take her out for a spin. I have an '02 Standard and live in Daytona where the corrosion is hellish. I could've saved $54.70 twice if I'd have just cleaned the electrical connections. If that doesn't work, try cleaning the sensor itsself as suggested above. If that doesn't work, your HD dealer will make another killing on your purchase of new parts! Good luck.
