Locals are just getting tired of all of the hassle of large bike festivals. They don't want the noise, the congestion, and the minority of attendees that exhibit bad behavior have spoiled the well. Myrtle Beach is seriously considering doing away with its bike week, and even Daytona locals and politicos are discussing severly curtailing the festivities. Several years ago Daytona PD started a large crackdown on loud pipes at both Bike Week and Biketoberfest.

But they aremore than Happy for the revenue

Sucks. The solution is to not go. Let the merchants who all of a sudden don't get the ton of revenue from big events like Americade lend their voice.

There are plenty of locales who welcome bikers (who, as a general rule, spend more money than other tourists/travelers).

I was just down in Newport R.I this weekend on a little ride and the City had put up a flashing messge board on the way into town that loud pipes on bikes and OTHER loud noises would not be tolerated. Glad i kept my stock pipes.

Can they really issue tickets if your state allows pipes?
If you can prove that the pipes on your bike are legal in your home state (which is becoming less and less likely as the states get pressured by the EPA to strictly control noise pollution), then, technically, no they can't because of the full faith and credit clause of the US Constitution which requires that each state respect the "public acts, records, and judicial rulings" of the other states. This is why, for example, we never wrote Florida drivers vacationing in NJ who would be driving around with pitch black window tint on all their windows even though this same tint was an equipment violation on a NJ registered vehicles. The problem is, if you ride up to NY State and they write you, you "might" have to get your case heard in a Federal appeals court to win which isn't cost effective and I'm sure they know this. I think Jager has the right answer. If you know they're going to break your *****, just don't go. When the money from these events dries up, they may start singing a different tune.

Keep in mind that "straight pipes" aren't legal anywhere because all states require some kind of muffler system on their registered vehicles.

That sucks. I'm just outside the Philly area and get into OH, NJ, NY, MD & VA on a regular basis and have noticed that they (cops) are writing upmore out of staters. My customs draw a lot of attention but I "Knock on wood" have nothad a problem yet! It will be my luck to get knocked off the next time I run out of state with my EG since i just put a set of Pythons on it.

Hey Old Man.... Newport have had signs posted for many years regarding loud pipes...
As for Americade... Your correct they like the money. I have a friend that owns a hotel there. That is a huge weekend for him I know for a fact he isn't complaining cause he has a harley himself.
Not going is a result and it is correct that the average biker will spend more then a tourist.... To bad they might ruin a good thing..

I too get frustrated when all bikers are singled out for the rampant few that "stretch" the laws. Yeah, you have a nice bike. Yeah, you have loud pipes...i am sooooooo impressed. Now put it back on your trailer and go home so the rest of us that actually RIDE our bikes can have a nice time.
IMHO...if you are going to wear a helmet make it a DOT rated one. Here in NC the legislature passed a law requireing all helmets to be DOT approved. Now, dont get me wrong, if your state doens not require a helment then great, do as you lease, i sure would. Same with pipes. No one wants to hear your friggin' loud a$$ pipes all the time.
I saw a great T-shirt at MB spring rally.
Nice trailer...Pu$$y
Next to it was one that read:
I rode my bike to trailer week

the thing I keep trying to figure out is how/when did the EPA get to classify'noise' from loud exhaust is 'pollution'? an annoyance, probably, but pollution? give me a break. IMO the EPA is perfect example of a gov't agency overstepping their bounds and running rampant in their struggle for more power, with no one controlling them.

This "Motorcycle Safety inititive" began last year all over the state of NY. I-84 in Fishkill one weekend the NYS troopers checked over 200 bikes in one weekend. They issues a number of tickets for various infractions. The most were for Non DOT approved Helmets and No Motorcycle endorsed license. Pipes are the least of there worries. They know how to tell if you have strait pipes, (Easy to tell)

Because of Federal Highway funding laws, they have a right to do these checks and call them "safety" No diffrent then the Truck Safety checks. I,m sure they do it all over the country, but seems New York has been quite upfront with it.

I guess your best defense is:

Wear a DOTHelmet where its required
Dont Crack your throttle if you know your being watched.
Dont ride if your non MC endorsed.

OR Like anything else. Its only illleagal if you get caught!!!
