Pricing Query.....
Some of these responses are incomprehensible.
Do you think that a dealer doesn’t get their parts cheaper than what a seller is selling them for on the internet?
The prices I quoted was for PARTS. The labour charges that were charged equated to over $100/hr ($380 for 3.5 hours).
The philosophy of HD dealers NOT allowing “on the road” riders to be stranded is sound and compassionate. Thankfully, this franchise believes in that policy; many don’t.
I know the costs of doing business, I also know what excessive profits are.
Check your fuel prices!
Labor varies - did you happen to keep them past their normal service hours? If so, you probably would (should) have paid more for overtime. Maybe they charge more for labour - after all, it looks more expensive!
I don't know of any HD dealers who would have left you stranded or made you wait (if they had the parts in stock) BUT I don't know of any that wouldn't have charged you full price, either.
I think your original post and the follow-up make you appear to be a whiner. YOU took your (running) bike there with a starter noise issue. YOU wanted it fixed right then. THEY accommodated you, and charged accordingly (did they give you an estimate?) and they performed the repair so that you could continue to ride. Now you get home and whine about not getting Internet prices.
The dealer didn't do you wrong. If you wanted Internet prices, you get Internet service. You could have taken your chances and ridden it home, ordered parts, and done the job yourself. You made your choice. Now if your post said "I developed this starter noise on a trip, felt I HAD to have it fixed, and now wish I hadn't because it cost so much more" I think we'd understand.
Be glad you weren't riding another brand. Be glad the dealership you went to charges "excessive profits" so that they can afford to stock parts and keep mechanics available for you and anyone else that has an emergency. You got what you paid for, and you paid for what you got.

All HD dealers pay the same, it is their option on what to sell them for, so whether a dealer is selling in the shop or on the internet, the price is the same. Then they have to pay the bills, support the building, make coffee for you while you wait for your repairs ......

So, you had to pay list for your parts, big deal, you got them on the spot, didn't you? What is their posted labor rate? If they charged you 3.5 hours at their posted rate, suck it up. If their posted rate was less, ask them why, but if you ask with an attitude, expect the same plus 20% in return.

Every dealer I have ever known puts priority on a "stranded" rider. They did that for you.

This ain't no fuel thread! Like I said earlier, even with the labor, you should have tipped the service guys for getting you in and out at a reasonable price. Somebody else is waiting because of your 3.5 hours. To quote SSJ, "If this experience is going to upset you this much then the whole Harley experience is something you're not going to enjoy so just sell your bike and try another hobby."
First you thought the dealership was out to get you because they charged you retail.
Then you thought the forum was out to get you because your post wasn't on page 1.
Now I bet you think we are all making fun of you. [sm=confused06.gif]
