I would suggest renting or test driving if they let you, some won't. If it is your first harley, try a few different touring models to see which one fits you best.

Test rode the 08 Streetglide before I decided I had to have it. After riding the 08 demo bikes I was concerned about the throttle lag on the demo bikes with the TBW, my 08 had no throttle lag. I have had a problem with the TBW last week, the connections to the throttle by wire were not connected securely, problem solved by the dealer.

Rented a Road Glide and Ultra Classic before purchasing. Very happy with the Ultra. Can't beat renting, gives you plenty of time with the bike and it was free with my purchase, dealer took all the rental charges off the price of the bike.
Went to "Demo Days" got to ride 3 of the bikes I was interested in. Bought an Ultra.... mainly for the wife as she wanted a comfy ride with a big back seat and rest. If it had been my decision, and I was riding solo, it would have been the Road Glide. \\; Awesome bikes.
Now that I have the Ultra, I'm glad I made that choice as I love it. \\; Best bike I've ever owned.
Watch the dealers for the Demo Days. \\; All you need is a valid license and a helmet. \\; They even have loaner helmets, but I prefer my own. :-)
