I'd guess you have carbon buildup in your combustion chambers. Probably, like glens says, from improper fuel mixture over time.
The engine is going to reach operating temperature fairly quickly, so unless you encounter stop-and-go traffic or something similar which is causing a temporary increase in temps, you wouldn't normally expect detonation to noticeably get worse the longer you're out riding. It is summer and the hot ambient temperatures make the air less dense.

The current "tune" is what is causing it. The SERT (when properly tuned), will FIX it.

Late model "Stock'ish" bikes simply run too lean due to EPA regulations emposed on the factory.

If the last person fueling at the pump, used reg. then you will be getting up to a half gallon of reg. until the premiem fuel has primed the lines.
