Non adjustable vs adjustable backrest?
Your not gonna be happy with the adjustable either. Ive had both, and neither went significantly further back than the other. Which is why I went with the Mustang.
What bike are you on, how tall are you, and what seat do you have on the bike?
IMHO,

As I recently stated in another post, the guys who are happy with the HD backrests, 7 times out of ten (from what I've read) seem to be running them with the stock EG style seats. (found on Ultras, Classics, Standards) On those seats, the driver portion of the seat is a good inch or so further forward than say your Sundowner. Remember when you put your sundowner on and found out it moved you back somewhat? The HD backrests are set up to be in the correct position (front to back) with the stock pillow look/comfort stitch seats. When you try to use them with a seat that is sitting you further back than those seats, what have you got? The backrest shoving you too far forward in relationship to the seat. Even if you get the angle right, your not sitting back in the "pocket" of the seat, where its the most comfortable.
Thats MY opinion. Others mileage may vary.
I am your same height, and tried both the adjustable and non adjustable HD backrest on my Street Glide WITH the Sundowner. NEITHER went far enough back for me. The adjustable was a JOKE!. It adjusted from almost bolt upright, to laying you down on the tank. I honest to god thought I had put it on backwards! All the adjustment seemed to be in the forward direction. Truth be told, the NON adjustable model came closer to being workable for me. But even with the bracket mounted all the way back on the fender, and the adjuster screw backed all the way OUT, It was still shoving me too far forward on my Sundowner. My personal feeling is, if you didn't like the fixed mount, the Adjustable is not gonna solve your problem.
A lot of this has to do with how you sit. If your comfortable sitting very upright, the HD offerings will work better for you. If you like to lay back a bit, or slouch somewhat, I don't think you will like them. IMHO Of course, its all opinion. Some guys love Corbin seats to death, others cannot stand them for 30 miles. Everyone is different.
I would really recoment you try a Mustang. I think it would work better for your application. Cheaper, more adjustable, the backrest pivots to fit to your back (neither of the HDs do) and the pad is much thinner, so it eats up less of your passengers space (if thats a factor). If you order directly from Mustang, they are pretty good about giving you 10 days to return it if your not happy (just don't damage it)

Of course, thats the StreetGlide stitched Sundowner. I assume you got the RK Custom stitch pattern. I would think it would look pretty close to your seat, so much that you would be the only one to notice.
