My starter started making a terrible noise on a trip last weekend. It seems like the motor compression is just too high for the starter, but I am running stock heads and pistons. If the bike doesn't fire instantly, the starter drags and sometimes the bike even backfires and blows smoke out the breather.
 \\;
Dealer thinks it's the starter clutch. I have never worked on a starter that had a clutch. I guess I don't know what a starter clutch is. Parts will be here in a few days. Does anyone know if this is an '08 problem, just a bad starter from the factory, or could my 103" upgrade put extra stress on the starter?

Heck, I have hot start isues with my 96", I would imagine they might be worse on your 103". \\; I know they started putting compression releases in the 103" cop bikes because they were going through so many starters.
 \\;
At first I thought it was just a hot starting issue, but it is getting progressively worse. Now it is having trouble when completely cool. I hope it hangs on until the parts get here.

Mine went out. I had less than 2300 \\; miles on it. The starter gear apparently got eaten.
When it went the bits of teeth went into the clutch. Dealer replaced whole clutch also. Took the 15 days.[:@]
My starter just took a dump and this is the second week sitting waiting on parts. I do believe some of the starters are just junk period. My motor is a stock 96" Sometimes when first starting the damn thing it sounds like rocks rolling in the primary and sometimes it sounds like the noise a car makes when its already \\;running and you try and start it again. Scared the crap out of the girl writing service when I did it and she wasn't expecting it
The related threads under this thread show some links to starters and starter clutches that have a lifetime warranty. Sounds like I might want to upgrade...............

For what its worth 3500 miles on my 08 110 and fires right off hot or cold.[sm=icon_beat.gif](Knock on wood) Wonder if there was a bad batch of drives. Hmm lesse 110 kit was installed and the SERT remapped the ECM wonder if this allows for easier start???
I didn't have any trouble at all the first 5,900 miles.
It was stated on another thread that if you let off the starter button before the bike fires and it does backfire, you have done damage to the start/starter clutch. I have done that before. Maybe it was a bit of my fault as well.

Starter clutches fail! \\; Been doin' it for years. \\; Kind of a "luck of the draw" deal, you get a good one or you get a weak one. \\; Time will tell.........
My old EVO just ate another $60 starter solenoid......[:@] \\; Best preventative for both problems is a good strong battery. \\; The main reason I keep both bikes on battery tenders when they're in the shop. \\; Turnin' big inch motors over is hard work. \\; Give your starter motor every advantage you can.
