Please help
Can anyone tell me if this is a fuel pump problem? I was riding home from Johnstown Saturday and after stopping to fill up, I was pulling out of the station and my bike just shut down. No codes or anything, just shut down. It started right back up and I went on my way. Then we stopped at a traffic signal , a long one, and when I started to pull out again, she shut down again. Same deal. I made it home OK but after getting home and resting awhile we decided to go to a local rally and when I turned on the kill switch, the fuel pump just kept on running. I turned off the kill switch and turned it on again, and the same thing. I turned the kill switch off again and when I turned it on again, the pump ran for about three seconds and shut off. \\; When I tryed to pull out of my driveway, the bike shut off again. I opened the fuel cap and looked in while turning on the switch and the fuel was swirling around inside the tank. Is this a sign that the pump is going out? I would appreciate any help.

Sounds like the same thing I experienced yesterday. A major electrical system failure. I posted below what happened to me. To put it simply, first read up in the ser manual how to remove the seat to get to the battery. \\; (great how-to writeup in section 2). Then check your battery connections for tightness. That was where my problem was....a loose positive battery bolt.

Good Luck, and look for the simple stuff firstcheck electrical plug in connections, battery, sounds electrical to me.

Thanks. The only reason I think that it is not an electrical problem is that the lights and turn signals were working fine. I was talking to a mechanic at Whites harley in PA. Saturday evening and he said that they have been having an extremely high number of fuel pumps going out on the "08" touring models. I really want to find out what the problem is but I am hearing that it takes about two weeks to get parts and I have a trip planned for July 11th and I'm afraid I won't get it repaired in time. I am calling the dealer today to see how soon I can get it in for repairs.
I have read somewhere on one of the forums of guys having same trouble and with the swirling in the tank and there is a line inside the tank that has been known to crack and that would cause the fuel pump to not build up pressure and not shut off. That would be a good place to start. Let us know if that might be your trouble

Well, since you reported your bike shuts down, then will re-start, and you have experienced this condition several times, I would discount the fuel pump even if you see some swirling in the fuel tankthis could be caused by vibration...Mine, when motor is \\;running shakes and swirls the fuel. When off, it is calm, but the pump only runs 4 seconds to pressurize the system, then shuts 0ff, sooo it takes a quick look to see any swirling. Besides, the reports I have read on here indicate once the bike dies, it is dead and won't re-start if the pump fails.

I don't know, and I am no HD tech by any means. my bike build date \\;is 12-07, so I am following this reported \\;fuel pump issue closely, but, don't get fixated on that being the only think that can cause a catestropic \\;motor shutdown, and especially if it will re-start and run fine, I'd be looking at electrical stuff...But, get it to the dealer once you have checked all the simple stuff.

Check the manufacture date on the bike. If it's prior to 01/2008 I would bet it's the fuel pump filter. You can find the date above the vin # on the left side goose neck under the tank. Lift the wire bundle up and you will see it. If the fuel is swerrling in the tank, that's your problem, a cracked filter. \\;It's not allowing the fuel system to pressurize properly.
Thanks again. I have called my local dealer and they said to bring it in and they will be able to tell me if it the fuel pump. I am going to take it in tonight after work. I will repost tomorrow and let you all know if thet tell me for sure that is it. As far as the swirling, it does it when I turn on the kill switch but before I try to start it. Thw swirling seems to be coming from the pump running but I'm not sure. I bought my bike august 07, just a few weeks after they were released. So I am sure it has the suspect pump in it.

I do not see (at least on the 07s, and doubt anything has changed in this regard since then) there there is any means to automatically monitor fuel rail pressure. The timeout always being the same after ignition-on would indicate it is purely a timing routine in the ECU. It seems to be an if the engine aint runnin yet, save the pump situation.
The swirling in the tank can easily be explained by the in-tank pressure regulator bleeding off and is therefore (can be, at least) entirely normal.
