Help! What is that?
It is not there when cold, but when it is warmed I hear a "rattle" at the front of the front cylinder valve cover but only from the left side, not from the right side of the engine. When riding, it gets louder from 2500 to 3000 RPM.
Before I tore the cover off, I just wondered if anyone might know what it is...

...well, it's impossible to know from here...but there are several things to check/do to find out what it is...first start with the bike cold and check all the clamps involved with the exhaust system..heat shields and mufflers. Then get down low near the engine and just touch and feel lots of parts and areas of the engine( foot levers, floorboards, shift linkage, cables, horn, everything you can find that's bolted onto the frame or engine). If everything is tight, then fire up the bike and crouch next to it, close, on the side where the noise comes from, and wait till it warms up. See if you can tell the moment the noise starts where it's comming from. The thing you want to know is...is this noise INTERNAL, or EXTERNAL. At some point you may be convinced it's internal. If it sound like a deep-rattle, way inside a piston jug...then you may be looking at a worn wrist-pin bushing. They are brass, and lean running wears them down to the point where the piston starts to slightly "bounce" off the cylinder walls. This is the all-to-familiar "rattle" that us old back-yard wrenches know about....then you're looking at a top end job, and might as well go big-bore while you're at it...good luck man...Joe

Check the top motor mount. \\; I had a similiar problem, and one of the bolts that hold the top motor mount came out. \\; When the motor got up to speed it would vibrate on the top of the cylinder. \\; Jst a thought. \\; Good Luck, CCRyder

I have a similar noise, for several years now. \\; It is a rattling, almost a tinkling sound, occurring only when I let off the throttle at highway speed, more often when going downhill, but it happens infrequently, weeks or even months apart. \\; From my perspective, it sounds like valve noise, but I don't have any clear notion of what it could be.
