Were there any warning signs or do they fail and the engine dies?

That's \\;pretty much it. Some have notice the fuel pump making a different \\;sound then normal. At that point take a look inside the fuel tank and if you can see fuel swirling around it very well could be \\;a failing \\;filter shell.
I'll ask again, I pulled mine out and had the new one and the old one side by side. You can't tell much difference. How are you guys that just pull it out and looking tell it's the new part. The big difference when comparing is the ribs when you take the reg out. I just don't see how you can tell unless you have the two side by side.

Yes I know the tread. And I changed mine. Your tell me you can tell the difference by pulling the assembly out of the tank and say " yes thats the old one"?

I have the filter shell on order so I havent seen the difference myself but from what I understand the difference is not very noticeable.

That was my point and I wasn't trying to start anything with you or anyone else. But some people are pulling them and saying It was the new one and putting it back in. They were maybe confusing the build date situation by not really knowing for sure. I'm just relating what I saw when I changed mine. There is not a big difference unless you look in the regulator hole. And you can't see that unless you pull the reg out.
Ultra classic purchase 8-11-07 build 88 just picked up my bike from the shop replace the fuel filter canister with the new one. Guess what, the old one was ready to go as normal stress cracks in the corners 7000 miles on it. Thanks to everybody in this form for writing in saving me from breaking down on the highway. Thank you all
