It's a friggin kick stand and it works great. I get nervous as well when the slope pushes the weight of the bike forward instead of rearward but it seems pretty stable.
Just look down at the slot where the tab engages and verify it is in the slot before hopping off.
if the tab is locked into the slot..... excuse my technical terms haha ........ then that puppy isnt going anywhere. at least thats how it is on my 08FLHX, but other earlier years may not have this luxury I could be wrong. Mine feels like it wants to fall over but it is always secure. Funny thing is last saturday I went to wash the bike and I was on a slight hill and my dad freaked out cause the bike rolled forward on the jiffy stand a tad. I told him no thats how it is and I rolled the bike and inch or two and put it back on the stand. At this point it did the same thing and he freaked out again and stormed over to show me how my bike was going to fall over haha. To prove my point I pulled the thing another 15 feet away from the hose and parked on a completely flat surface where the bike did the same exact thing and he was dumbfounded. I got off the thing pissed and said SEE ITS FINE!!!! then I pulled out the hose an extra 15 feet and proceeded to wash the bike to cool my temper. Hey at least he cares haha.
Just in case you don't know-you can see the slot everyone is talking about just inside the left footboard-watch it engage a few times and set your mind at ease
