failure must be caused by gremlins in the fuel tank continuously pulling and shaking at the shell as that 6 gal of fuel sloshes around.Once they get the tab holdersreinforced enough, then the tabs themselves will prolly fail. Must be a lot of vibration and fuel sloshing forces on that shell during bike operation. If not that, it could be the composition of the plantic won't stand up to being in fuel over time.
I saw on the other forum that a couple of guys have had the replacement shell to \\;fail also. Harley may have to redesign the part again to reslove this.
Just changed mine out yesterday also. Now I see there is a recall on the shell from HD
Glad I did I would not want my stealership to touch me bike.

\\; Recall Notice: 0135: 2008 FL TOURING FILTER SHELL
My results were a little different, I just got done replacing mine. There was absolutely no sign of stress on the old shell even though I know it was the old style. I even looked at it under a lighted magnifying glass, but no sign of possible failure. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad i got it replaced if nothing else for the peace of mind.
Not sure, I believe they were under the impression that they got the updated filter shell. No way to know for sure I guess. I wonder if those ou us \\;that purchased and replaced theirs themselves \\;before the recall can get reimbursed for the cost of the part and who should you contact to find out?
