I've got the top plate loosened but can't figure out how to release the electrical \\;connector on the bottom of the top \\; plate. I have the service manual but still can't get it to release. For those that have done the change, can you help out?
Ok, just finished changing out the canister. Didn't have to undo the electrical connector under the top plate after all. Went back and looked at Dawgs original post and saw that he didn't either. Just took a little force to get the canister free from the tank enough to loosen the connectors on the fuel lines. Mine had very slight stress fractures on 3 of the 4 tabs. My bike was built in July 07. For those considering changing before failure, do it yourself, don't pay the dealer. Fairly easy just need to \\;have patience.

Good deal. \\; Glad to see you gotter \\;done. \\; Dude, I changed mine out yesterday, and I believe it was just in the nick \\;of time. \\; One of the tabs was pretty much cracked all the way through, on one side, \\;and the rest had stress cracks in each of the corners. \\; My build date was 08/07
Mine was stressed on three tabs and all but broke on the other. After reading about this problem here I figured I had better check mine.
When I started the bike and looked inside the fuel tank there was fuel spraying across the tank, so I took it apart and found the crack/stress marks. I reassembled the bike and told the dealer that I had a problem ( didn't tell them that I had taken it apart ) and they agreed to fix it under warrenty. Should be done tomorrow.
Quick Question, what do you think causes the failures? Is it the 58 lbs of pressure when the fuel pump is operating and putting force on the u clip anf tabs that holds the canister in place?
Did you follow the service manual to relieve the pressure in the fuel lines? Something about removing the fuel pump fuse and running the bike till it dies, then remove maxi fuse?
