I decided to try my heated grips on my new 08 Ultra Firefighter Edition on the PA turnpike Sunday evening. It was very cool at 70 mph and I had forgotten my jacket. I was passing an 18 wheeler and suddenly I lost all throttle/went to idle. What a surprise/shock/adrenlin rush! I headed for the shoulder asap. I shut grips off got throttle back and continued. I decided to try grips to see if they caused problem. Sure enough 3 minutes after turning them on same thing happened. I felt a racheting feeling in grip/throttle. Being a tech I feel they were slipping on splines. Grips were installed at dealer at time of delivery by a very good tech that I trust with my life(apparently).
 \\; I feel strongly these accessories need to be bullet proof and tested by the Motor Company.
God my maker was surely watching over me. Please be ware.
I do not want \\;brother/sister riders to have same surprise. \\;
I have the HD heated grips on my '08 UC, dealer installed before delivery. \\; No visible wires and they work fine, haven't tried them recently, but they worked fine last spring.
I would lile to know how many people have had trouble with their heated grips with the throtle by wire. I have a new 08 Ultra waiting for me back in the states and planned on putting heated grips on. \\;I plan to ride year round in the northwest... unless it snows.
Bout ten bikes with cheap snow mobile heaters with 0 problems.Thse wrap around handle bars with a low temp and high temp switch,most snow machine catalogs around $30.
There are new grips for the '08s and later because of the FBW. Then again, everyone I know who has heated grips for any year has had a failure at some point. Usually they just don't heat anymore. Maybe the snowmobile type mentioned above is the way to go.
