Can someone give me a break down on the VIN number, build date, etc ?

The build date should be stamped on the frame in the area at the rear of the tank.

the number should read something like this:

1 HD 1 BJ Y 1 3 5 K 111000

1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. 10.

1. Market designation (1 character) 1=Domestic, 5=International

2. Manufacturer (2 characters) HD= Harley Davidson

3. Motorcycle type (1 character) 1=Heavyweight motorcycle

4. Model (2 characters) whatever model you have eg BJ=FLSTC

5. Engine type (1 character) Y=Carby, B=Fuel injected

6. Introduction date (1 character) 1=Regular, 2=Mid year, 3=California

7. V.I.N. check digit (1 character) Can be 0-9 or X

8. Model year (1 character) 5=2005

9. Assembly plant (1 character) Y=York, PA USA, K=Kansas City, MO USA

10. Sequential number (6 characters) varies
