Default FBW break down update

Something a little new and interesting and not heard of yet. First a little history. I was riding down a local highway and suddenly felt light surging. I opened up the throttle and when I let off it began to backfire repeatedly, than felt like the motor died. I pulled in the clutch and realized the engine was stuck at a high idle, about 1,400, than noticed the throttle was not reponsive at all.

I called the dealer, who walked me thru the ignition switch cycle 4 times but it did not work, so I had the 08 FLHX with 10,000 miles towed into dealer, (and ate $200.00 towing).

On the fourth day at the dealer they finaly found a way to work it into their schedule. They are usually booked up 4-6 weeks for appointments so I figured I was lucky.

The service tech called me on the 4th day in the evening to tell me that at first they thought it was a FBW problem but its flashing codes they havent had happen yet( I dont know the numbers). Than the shop put their 19 year master tech on my bike. This tech said the trouble codes and diagnosis say the induction module is defective. I asked what that was, he said its a device that sits between the 2 cyclinders and has 4 sensors in it. Then he said the master tech is not convinced and doesnt want to replace it and have the bike do the same thing to me again so he wants to keep the bike untill Tuesday so he can contact the engineers at Harley Davidson and discuss the diagnosis with them.

I am bummed because I am sure this means ordering a part from HD that will take at least 2 weeks to get, than another week for the shop to get back to my bike and finish it. A total of 4 weeks of summer riding lost. I wish the dealers would offer a free rental bike since mine is going to be down for a while.

Anyways, thought I would post the mechanical problem incase someone else runs into the same crap. When the dealer calls me back with a defintive answer to the problem I will update.

yeah, it sucks that you are without a bike. but props to the master tech for not wanting to just throw a new part on and let you get stranded out in the middle of bfe.

The dealers charge top dollar to work on your bike, but seldom have top mechanics that can do the job.

Mine did the exact same thing once. I shut it down and restarted and it hasn't happened since. Let us know what the final outcome is. My dealer didn't have a clue and decided not to do anything about it since it wasn't happening again.

Hey Pounder my bike is still in the shop. The dealers Tech wants to call the engineers at Harley on Tuesday to confirm the induction module, andmaybe he is on to why they are failing. I imagine after they order the part, get it delivered, and repaip my bike I am about 2-3 weeks away from getting my bike back. I'll let you know how it goes after I get it back. Good luck with yours too. Hopefully it doesnt do it again. I just upgraded my towing service from road america because I have a feeling this wont be my last tow.
