This is a myth that has no rational foundation. There is nothing unique about an air-cooled, internal combustion engine over their water-cooled counterparts, except that the former has less control over its internal temperatures. I have a turbocharged car with an oil cooler and its oil runs as hot as my Harley, also equipped with a cooler. Other than temperature, what could be different between the two engine types? Metalurgy? No. Stress? No. Synthetic oil is designed to handle any temperature dished out by Harley engines, even when running in slow-moving, hot-summer traffic. See the articles written by the three motorcycle mags I referenced earlier.

I ran synthetic "car oil" in my '96 RK for 106k miles. In 1998 its static compression was 155/160, in 2006 160/160--and the heads were never removed from that bike. It is still running with >115k (at last check).

If the HD oil is good enough and keeps the engines running for 100k + miles, then giong to any premium type of synthetic may be a step above what is recommended. I do believe that a good gear oil in the tranny is preferred, but who am I to say, I have not run years worth of testing, but it works for me.
Mobil 1 20w50 or better in the engine, Redline Shockproof Heavy in the trans and Dexron III ATF in the primary and so far at 25k miles, no issues. (I have experimented with a heavier 25w60 dino engine oil, yes the lifters were a bit quieter but the engine temps were also a bit higher and consumption was a bit higher).

Put in what will make you feel good and what you think is readily available.

Great post. There is one major difference between an aircooled and liquid cooled engine, tolerances between the metals. Aircooled engines are designed looser to contend with the greater heat expansion. Which is the reason why I don't mind 50W in my harley but don't need it in my car. Back in the 70s during the summer, Harley riders would even buy our 60 and 70w oil that we used in our Beach 18s.

That worthless fact doesn't change your point at all, just kind of something to add to the conversation to help myself feel important.

I run Mobil 1 20-50 in my 05 EGC for 44,000 miles, in all three holes with narry a prob. Not saying anything wrong with other weight oils in tranny and primary, just too much to keep up with in my forgetfull years.

I use Mobil 1 vtwin, but my walmart stopped selling it. So now I use AMSoil 20-50, but I only use AMSoil 75-90 Sever Gear in the tranny. It shifts so good, I would never go back to the engine oil in the tranny. I change it every 10,000 miles. Almost no shavings at all on the drain plug.
