I'd run engine oil in the engine and gear oil in the tranny. Brand is subjective. I use Mobil I 20W-50 Syn Vtwin for the crankcase because it's readily available around here at WalMart. I WOULD use Mobil I 75-90 Synthetic Gear oil(from WalMart) in the transmission if I didn't have a shelf full of Shockproof . Primary? I'd just use HD stuff or regular 20W-50 car oil non-synthetic if I weren't using Redline MTL.

My $.02 anyways.

I ordered amsoil off the internet and it was here in 2 days with regular ground. As for grades, use the chart on website according to temps in your area. I went with 20-50 engine and primary, amsoil 70-110 trans.

If Mobil I is good enough for an $80,000 Z06 Corvette, I'd venture to say it would meet and beat all qualifications for a century year old V-Twin air cooled design but that's just me.

There are plenty white-papers on Mobil I and its efficacy on air cooled engines, but I lost all my subscriptions that had links in them with the new forum.

Google M1 White Papers.

Engine: Any high-quality 15w50 or 20w50 synthetic oil

Tranny: 75w90 or ??w140 gear oil (preferably synthetic). The thinner variety is sufficient.

Primary: Any 15w40 or 20w50 fossil engine oil (preferably without moly)

ultracl$$ic comparing vettes to hds is like comparing vettes to airplanes. a water cooled engine has different needs than an air cooled engine. is it good enough? maybe so but info from this group is where the metal meets the road!

Royal Purple also lists grade recommendations for Harleys (http://www.royalpurple.com/rp-which-oil-mc.html), but I disagree with their recommendations. First, MaxCycle is an excellent oil, but not worth the almost 2x premium over their regular 20w50 "car" oil, similar to the rationale behind using Mobil 1 15w 50 instead of the more costly 20w50. A gearbox should use gear oil, so pick their MaxGear 75w90 or 85w140, or the same viscosity from another brand. The primary does not require high-tech oil like RP, M1, Amsoil, Redline, etc. I use Castrol GTX 20w50, but any cheap 15w40 or 20w50 fossil oil is fine.

I wouldn't get hung-up on manufacturer recommendations or lack thereof, or their marketing hype. Some oil marketers use specious or misleading "independent tests" to hype their products, which are funded and designed by the oil maker, so caveat emptor. Any high-quality synthetic oil will work fine for the Harley engine or tranny, and this has been born out by several lab tests conducted by motorcycle magazines (e.g., American Iron, Motorcycle Consumer News, and Quickthrottle).

If Harley Syn 3 is good for all three holes......and I assume it is 20/50 since that is what the engine calls for) how do people say 75/90 gear lube is ok for the tranny?
I am not saying it is not, but harley recommends Syn 3 (20/50)
I recently had a 10,000 mile service done on my bike and the mech put in Amsoil
75/90. It was Ok, nothing I could tell....time came a few weeks ago for an oil
change and I put in Syn 3. Bike runs the same, shifts the same.
I don't know if it would make a difference if you drained oil off off welfare peanut butter and put it in the tranny.......I figure I can't go wrong with manufacturers suggestions. Gonna check the pantry for peanut butter, just in case.

when i talked to a spokesman at mobil, he said that gear oil and engine oil are measured differently... in other words, 90wt gear oil is the same as 45wt engine oil...
