Trying to get all my ducks in a row before I start ordering parts. Wow.... Who knew there were 4 different types of backrests. Just curious for you guys that added a tour pak to your bike, what type of backrests you guys are using and how does your passenger like it?
+1 on the comfort stitch backrest. You can get the cheaper one but I personally think it looks just that, Cheap!! I was torn between the comfort stitch and the mustang backrest, but could not bring myself to pay an extra $70 for the Mustang just because it matched my seat. Your wife will be happy with the comfort stitch! Bryan
Structurally, the backrests will be the same; only the covering is different. I bought a new one on Ebay in the one-piece comfort stitch model. In '06 the OEM backrests on Classics and Ultras have the pad seperate from the backrest; it attaches using two bolts. That's what I purchased so I had to drill the holes to mount the pad. Not a big issue. Previously, the pad was sewn to the backrest. Don't know why HD changed, and I don't think it makes a difference.
As for the cover, IIRC, HD makes one that matches the OEM SG seat which may influence your decision. I was happy to use the comfort stitch and sell the pillow look backrest that came with the TP I purchased on Ebay.
