Default FLHX clutch?

I have an 08 flhx with 5000 miles. I have to push the clutch lever back out when shifting. I have read the proper adjustment method, but I don't understand why on a new bike having never been adjusted before, one can't just tighten it with just the cable adjuster? Why do you have to open up the derby cover?

It's most likely due to break-in. Every Harley I have owned and most of my friends have had the same issue you describe.

+1 i cannot handle the factory setup. might try this. adjust cable to loose then adjusting main nut till it touches and pressure is felt. then back off 1/8 turn. adjust cable to 1/8" freeplay. clutch engages at first feel instead of end of handle

Removing the derby cover gains access to the clutch adjustment screw. More than likely the clutch set screw adjustment is OK. All you need to do is adjust the clutch cable. Follow the clutch cable down to the rubber boot. Slide boot out of the way and adjust the bolts to reduce the clutch play down to 1/8 of an inch. I had the same problem and did both the clutch and cable adjustments. I got so used to pushing the clutch lever back I still do it.

My FLHX had the same issue. It was adjusted at the first service.

Did you service the bike at 1000 miles ? Adjusting the clutch is part of that service !

You may want to open the Derby just to make sure the nut is tight. I would adjust here before playing with the cable.
