Been hanging around the forum for a while reading opinions on the both 09 and earlier model Road Kings. I'm considering getting an 09 but have concerns as I'm 5' 7.5". I know the bike can be lowered but I'm trying to avoid that as I had an 07 Road Glide lowered and severely lost cornering ability and ended up selling the bike for something that would fit me a little better. I know I want the touring ability back so am now looking at getting the 09 with an aftermarket or modified seat.
Have any vertically challenged people been able to get by with the seat modification only? I think I may have lowered my previous road glide a little too much. Has anyone used the HD low profile rear suspention and forks? How is clearance in the corners?
I'm 5'8" and ride an 07 with no problem reaching the ground. I just put a Mustang solo on and it seems to have put me a little further back and a little higher and I can still flat foot. Best advice is to demo or rent and see how you feel.
I ordered an 09 RK and its due in late September. I am only 5'8" with maybe a 30" inseam. I was very concerned as well with the height and rented a 08 RKC before to make sure I was confortable with the height. The dealership didn't have the RK so the RKC was as close as I could get and had no problems flat footing it with stock seat. I understand the RKC is a little lower but it still gave me a good idea of ride height. I am planning to put the HD reach seat on before I take it home. From what I have found it brings you closer to the bars and maybe an inch lower to the ground. Probably will also send my stock seat to meancitycycles to have it reshaped if the reach seat doesn't lower me enough. I don't plan on lowering the RK, but if the seats and new boots don't do it, it will always be an option. Good luck with your decision and I hope this helps!
I just spoke with a guy down the street from me who is similar in height to me and rides a road king classic. He said he swapped the seat out for a corbin seat which put him closer to the controls and closer to the ground. He said he had no problem reaching the ground flat-footed... Looks like I'm going to go one step further and demo ride one today. They have the demo's close by...
Also, considering putting 508's on the bike for a closer reach. I though I read a thread somewhere in this forum that stated the ABS models would not accept aftermarket handlebars because of an extended brake line issue. Sounds like BS to me but then again I don't own an ABS model. Is this something I need to worry about with the handlebars on the 09?
