Default True Duals Install Question

I am taking my Ultra to the dealer on Tuesday of next week due to poor fuel mileage, I average about 37 on the hwy with the cruise set at 70 and also have an emission code present. I ordered a set of true duals, dresser duals from V&H.

Should I take the bike to the dealer and have them address the fuel mileage problem without installing the true duals or install the true duals and have them address the problem and have them tune the bike for the duals?

I have XIED's that I have removed from the bike and the mileage has not gotten better and was thinking that this device would suffice for fuel management for the duals.

Any insight would be great.

What gear are you running in at 70? I've found I get better mileage if I stay in 5th until at least 75 or 80. I don't think you are going to get a whole lot better mileage by taking it back into the shop, high 30s to low 40s seems to be pretty common. I also think too many are shifting into 6th too soon and actually getting worse mileage because of throttle position when pulling small hills or bucking a light wind.

If you really want them to mess with the fuel mileage thing, put on the V&H pipes first. If they reflash your ECM, the problem you might end up with is a very lean mixture which generates more heat. You should see my blue SE slip-ons to see what a very lean Air/Fuel mixture does.

Are you completely stock now? If so, 37 may be a little low. I intentionally run a little on the rich side (IMHO, better to be a little rich than lean) and I average high 30s, maybe low 40s if its mostly highway. Lots of folks will tell you they're scoring in the high 40s, but my guess is most of them are running very lean. If you purchase a fuel management system and get a good dyno tune, then they can dial it in for you. That being said, you mentioned you're getting an emissions code, so I agree its probably best to let the dealer have a look. Personally, I would probably put the duals on before taking it in, since only changing the pipes shouldn't have a dramatic impact on your AFR.

I would consider that good mileage, and I don't flog mine. I average around 35 on the low side and 37 on the high side. I have true duals.

I have an 08 Ultra and this past March we left the coast of NC and rode to Daytona. I averaged anywhere from 42 to 43 mpg's at every fill up along the way. That was using a calculator and checking the miles traveled at every gas stop. Granted the four of us took our time meaning on the way dowm rode 70 to 72 mph. I havn't checked the mileage since because to me it's a moot subject, it burns what it burns. We plan on riding back to Daytona in October and I'll check the mileage again. By the way, it was four bikes and four riders, no passengers!

I have an 07 with stock headers into SE-II Slip-ons, (pre-emission) SE A/C and SERT. I get 41-43 every tank. 95% ridden 2up and at speeds from 55-80.

In my opinion 37 sucks. I'd put on the VH Duals and take it in, have them do a download and see what happens.

Just my 2 cents......mps

I had the pipes (RINEHARTS) put on when I bought the bike, along with the stage 1 kit and they re-tuned the bike. I have been getting around 40 MPG.

I have an 08 with true duals, ovals & Fuelpak and I am averaging 33 MPG. I maybe got 35 when all stock for the first 3K miles. Your mileage sounds pretty good to me.

Default You know what they say about opinions

as long as they know the emission code was present before the exhaust work was done. remember -and this is a point well argued -by the book -you are voiding your warranty by changing the pipes... I have entirely too much fun riding my Harley to worry about how many miles to the gallon I am getting. I was at a local bike night and there was a sleeper RV on display -my wife and I were checking out and I inquired as to its gas mileage... first -I was corrected -its diesel -and second, if I have to ask how many miles to the gallon I clearly can't afford it.
