Default Crappy Clamps

I have a question:why cant I take the little block out of the muffler clamp and hold the bolt with a small pair of vice grips and tighten it up enough to keep the muffler from sliding back?Mine has moved back twice and every time I have picked up more vibration at idle when the slide hanger bottoms out.I can buy a new clamp but why if this will work? Thanks for any input.

new clamps do work better. instead of removing the block try this: drill a small hole in front of the clamp and put a sheetmetal screw in the hole to keep muffler from moving back. then tighten the clamp

I cut a strip of thin aluminum flashing to go between the clamp and muffler. Tightened it and it hasn't slipped loose again. Cut it more narrow than the clamp and it can't be seen.

pop rivets work great too. the screamin eagle muffs came with rivets for some models.
new clamps work best! quit being cheap!

+1. You can use an aluminum can. PITA, but it works.

I would go with the new clamps so the warranty isn't voided on other stuff like brake light mounts, horn button, gas cap, etc.

Check the gap in the flanges of the mufflers and see if they are completely compressed with the clamps tightened. (touching- completely compressed.) I had this problem with some aftermarket slipons. I took a very thin cut off wheel and opened the slots in the flanges abit. This allowed the clamps to due their job. The mufflers slipped no more. New clamps would not hurt either.
