I installed a Sony head unit (CDX GT720) with a Hog Wired adapter to retain the controls. The install kit of the radio looks pretty clean as well. If interested in Alpine, I have a practically new unit with the ipod control module that I removed from my daughters car for sale.

Another satisfied Biketronics customer here. My dealer only charged $41 to install the unit in my 08 FLHT. Great option, great price, great unit. I bought the basic Sony 520 unit, no skipping and I've been caught in a few rain storms, one was a real gully washer, with no adverse effects to the stereo. I also purchased the front rain cover, which was not on during the worse rain storm.

Yet another Biketronics vote. Easy install and plug in. I made my own speaker grills out of stainless mesh.

Couple questions if anyone can answer..........

1. Where can I tap in for a 12V switched source for an aftermarket radio?

2. Will a standard one din radio install in the factory hole without any installation kits, modifications, etc?

1. I think I used the cig lighter...or you can use the head light.

2. No...you need to purchase (from Hawg Wired or Biketronics) or fabricate a bezel for the face. Then you need to do the same for behind the fairing...I fabricated both.

Abn...your inner fairing components look SICK...gauges with radio, AWSOME.

There is a ground stud on the base of the triple tree that uses a 3/8" nut IIRC--virtually identical to the ground studs located under your seat, in front of the battery box. Mike, at Biketronics, stressed the importance of excellent ground so I used the triple tree ground stud. You can access the nut from the front, but it's easier if you remove the fairing cap.

You can also use the ignition power wires for switched/accessory power control, which is how I wired mine.

As for installing the radio, it can be installed in the existing fairing insert used on the Standard, but it will require cutting the insert to mount the radio and run wires. Much easier to buy the Biketronics or Hawg-wired installation kit.

For your situation I'd go Biketronics on headunit so you can retain and keep your hand controls. I'd go elsewhere though for speakers and a good mini power amp !

That's exactly what I was thinking, but I'd have to run a 12V wire anyways from the battery for the amp so it almost seems logical to do whatever I want (Alpine, etc.) and as far as the hand controls, a PAC unit will solve all that. I just have a problem with Sony. I've never used it. I've ALWAYS had Alpine electronics in all my vehicles. Trust me, I've been looking at all my options and it just seems going ALL aftermarket with the products I WANT is the best way, not using some partial kit here, piecing others there, etc.

As for right now this is the plan......

Alpine IDA-X100 reciever/iPod
ARC KS 125.2 mini amp
JBL Component speakers with tweeters in empty guage spots
PAC hand control module
Thinking about buying the bezel and cradle from Hawg Wired
Hidden antenna

I also went out and bought the three pocket fairing pouch so I can hide the iPod in one of the pouches. The only downfall to that is I'll have to drill a hole in the inner fairing for the iPod wire unless I can come up with a different way of routing it. Maybe there's a different storage pouch that I can mount near the bottom of the fairing so I don't have to drill.

So if you're using an Ipod connected to the Sony with an Ipod interface, do any of the handlebar controls let you skip through a playlist? Forward, back, that kind of thing?

Would be nice to be able to just set up a playlist and not have to look at the Ipod.

Default PAC handlebar controls

When you do the project, post pics, especially of the PAC installation. I'm familiar with the product but don't recall seeing an installation detailed on HDF. I'm a very happy Biketronics user, but a detailed account with pics of a Pac install would be useful for others.
