Default Any Idea's (Engine Light)

Here is what is happening. This past week, I have installed tru-dual Rineharts exhuast system on the bike. Power Commander, and a Arlen Ness Air System. (Stage 1 kit). Running a closed loop system.

Had it Dyno tune. Bike runs GREAT.

While riding last night, with some family members, the Enigne Light came on for a breaf momment, then went off.

Later that night, filled up the bike, hit the power switch, waited till the engine light went out, then started the bike. Instantly the engine light came on. Shut the bike off, and then restarted it. The engine light stayed off this time.

Again, later after reaching the restuarant, and eating, we were ready to leave, and the bike repeated itself, engine light coming on after starting it. After shuting it down, and restarting the light stayed off.

NO CODES CAME UP. I AM AT A LOSS.

Has anyone after installation of a Stage 1 system, have this small problem arise?

Thanks

I have heard a few members here at HD Forums complain of the same exact issue....exactly the same. One or more have contacted either Fuel-Moto, or DynoJet for some answers. IIRC they were told it was sort of normal, and just the ECU learning the new system or something to that effect. I would guess if you search the Touring forum, you will find the thread or posts I am thinking of. In any case....I dont think you have a problem....yet. If it continues, I would call your tech line and just see what they say.

Yep! Same thing happen to me. I can't help you out because I don't know what caused it. It seems to have straightened itself out has not done it again.
I'm thinking it may have had something to do with the security system and electrical interference from something. Don't you just love electronics when they mess up?
If you find out anything please let me know!

thanks

I too, also have the security system on the bike. But I dont see how it would effect the engine light. But I am no electronics engineer.

I also forgot to put, we also put 9mm Hot Fire spark plug wires on the bike too.

Thanks,

If the light goes out after a few seconds and there is no code then it is probably a misfire code. You could maybe have your dealer check for codes in history and see if there are any. Misfire codes usually clear themselves. Suspect the problem will clear itself up after a few miles and the ECU learns the new system.

Default Update on Engine Light

We had stopped in Conrads in East Joliet..

They checked the bike out, and there was two historys on the bikes ECM unit.

Both the front cylinder, and rear cylinder had a missfire code. They cleared it out.

Dont know what caused it yet. Called the Harley Shop that did the Dyno, bouncing several thoughts on them, and they have a few ideas also.. He went back and looked at the map that was on the computer, that was installed on the bike...To see if there was something that he missed...Will know more on Tuesday...When I drop the bike off....

What is really strange, is when the engine light does come on, and goes off. And we know pretty much its a missfire that is being sent to the ECM unit. We are not hearing any poping sound through the airbreather, or anything out the exhaust system, that would even be considered a missfire of any sort.. Wouldnt it create somekind of popping sound, or backfire through the exhaust, or any thing noticable..

Just my thoughts on it at the momment.

Anyone have opinions or thoughts.

Also found out from the Harley shop, that after you start the bike, if the engine light does come on, and goes off, there is a history code that is on the bikes ECM unit. It stays on the bike until it is cleared out. However, after about 30 to 40 starts of the bike, and No new History codes inserted, the engine light wont come on after you start it, however the code will stay until they remove it. Tad bit of information I learned today...

does anyone know if these transient/misfire codes clear themselves if you disconnect the battery for 10min or so?

if the missfire is in history, most likely you missfired in the past, but are not currently - that is why you don't notice it now. I believe it is 50 starts, with no repeat, the engine light will behave normally. I go thru this with my 99 - in the spring, first time I fire it up, it may miss or foul a plug. Then for 50 starts, I deal with the engine light going out, then back on for 8 seconds, then out again. all detailed in the service manual.
