WOW! What a testament to the legend. Just goes to show that all the lip service about problems might be just that, LIP SERVICE! Glad to hear the results, very informative.
Read page 5. Been riding Harleys for 30 years and first time I've lost all oil pressure on one. Wobbly crank (runout .032) took 16K miles to stress the cam support plate enough that it finally cracked and let the pinion shaft bushing move and spin thereby losing oil pressure. I'm dealing with a blown engine on a stock 16K mi, well maintained Ultra. That's more than lip service!
Perpetuating rumours of problems is bad, however sharing first hand experience of a factory problem should be welcomed as informative. Do I think all 07s/08s have this problem, of course not. However, if it is near 5%, that is way too damn many for a decent QA system.
The only issues that I have had with my 08 UC is leaking from the rear jug @ 8800 miles. Dealer replaced both front & rear pistons and rings. Seems the leaking was coming from the rear ring and compression was getting by and causing me to leak oil from the rear rocker cover & the intake. Other than that only had a CC switch replaced.
Almost 40,000 miles and no problems. 2007 Superglide. At about 13k I pulled my 'toy' compensator for the Evolution Industries 30tooth direct drive chain and sproket. At the time there was some concern by some that the crank would not handle the ''shock loading" of not using a compensator. I ran the bike anyway without the compensator, because I fell in love with the new found power and being able to finally use Sixth Gear at hwy speeds. At about 26k I had Latus HD build&tune this bike into a 103 with W7h cam, Basley Superstock Heads and and TP92 clutch for a tune 110h/111q. The runout was checked by Mike Stagman prior to the build and found to be within normal. It's not unusal for me to exceed the posted speed limit, hauling *** to work and faster comming home. over 60 miles each day to work and more on weekends (during riding season here in spokane) and I often race other V-twins.
As this exciting riding season comes to a close I have logged 39,843 as of today and I have not experenced any issues with my early 2007 stock crank.
I think that some less experenced riders may have abused their bike by ""lugging" and or "breaking while accelerating".
I will not make the claim that there were no defective cranks, but I am more inclined to believe that there are far more riders who have unknowing abused their machine.
Wow, a lot of happy campers from this thread. Great!!!!!
07(March) electra glide classic with stage 1 (rinehart tds, seac, sert), 23k and no issues that I know of. Will find out very shortly as I plan to change to jugs and the cam this winter.
