how much oil you need depends on how it's drained. How long did it it sit before you drained it, engine hot or cold, on lift or leaning, change the filter before or after pan is drained? all this has to do with how much oil is left in system. I always put 3 1/2 in, ride it awhile and add a little when needed.

I have a stock, 2004 Elec Glide Classic. The repair manual says the oil capacity is 4 quarts. The recommended procedure is to put in 3.5 and than add oil until it shows full on the dip stick.

Regards,
Mel

3.5 to 4 qts. (Check the dip stick.)

Geesh.....can we move on to "tire pressure.....nitrogen or regular air pump?"

I my 07 service manual it says the engine capacity is 4qts, when doing an oil change to replace the oil with 3.5 qts, this is due to the amount of oil that will not drain out, and can only be removed with a cleaning (as in engine rebuild). I put in 3.5 qts, my buddy who does not believe me puts in 4qts, and has oil dripping out of his A/C constantly. Just put in 3.5 take it for a drive, when you get home check it, then you will know.

the Harley is the only engine I have ever owned which requires an oil level check with a hot engine. and then they put the frickin' oil cap right next to the exhuast pipe.

4.0 quarts from dry, if you could possibably drain it all out. Usally there is about a half quart left in the crankcase, more or less. that is why 3.5 works, then top it off hot, 200 degrees or more. Its better to be a little under the high mark than over at all.

I did answer the question and think that you must be incredibly lazy if you are looking for an easier way to get the oil level right other than checking it.
