although my 08 (with the 103 kit) is "faster" than any of the stock 96s that run with me from time to time...

i really recommend doing the entire kit... i was told by my dealer that if i did the heads and a different cam, it would void my warranty... so i had them do the kit with the pistons/jugs etc. i wish i would have just done the entire thing, as now i am having to go back in to do some good headwork and a nice cam set up (also switching to chain)...

after riding a friends bike with a "real" setup, i wish i would have done it in the first place, as someone else stated, i think the real addition would be in the heads and a cam

Cool

New to the motor work up stuff. In the parts book for 09 you can not get heads unless you are getting the 110" kit. Now in the 08 SE book that i have seen on line it has heads you can get, but it has the crossed flags and all that junk about race tracks and EPA crap and such. So my question is can you do head work, or get replacement heads for the 103", which I would like and still be street and EPA legal. I don't see why not since the 110" comes with them. I am waiting on my 09 and have commited to the 103" stage 1 and doing HQ 500 cams. Still time to order heads, but would like to stay legal.

Yep, I agree with going with Heads and cams in addition to the 103" displacement, can't imagine not taking advantage of the combination.

Thinking maybe Headquarters but still got some Matlocking to do on it all.

The thought of it complete is making me drool.

Anymore thoughts by you 103" owners is appreciated.

Definitely go at least 1 step bigger than you are planning. It costs more to tear it down twice than doing it right the first time. Personally I went with the HQ 103 set up which I like however I think I am going to go bigger this winter.

Anyone want to buy a used HQ 103 set up with less than 2000 miles?

Tom73--

What work and components did you have done to yours? Do you have the torque numbers for it from a dyno?

103" sounds good to me because I don't want to have to delve into the cases. But yes, if I had my druthers I'd have a huge inch motor to rip up the land on!

If you're looking for torque...do the Big Bore kit and the Screaming Eagle 255 cams at the same time. I could not believe how much stronger the bike was after installation. The 103 with SE-255 cams is a huge improvement over the stock 96 engine.

IMO, None of the above. Go with a Head Quarters cam.

I've got the 103 Stage 2 kit with stock heads and the cams that come with that kit (255 I believe). It is a BIG improvement over my 96" Heritage with a Fat Cat, K&N and Zippers tuner.

I'm also contemplating adding a couple of "teeth" to the rear sprocket since it seems geared high to me and I do a lot of low speed work on the range with that bike. The Heritage seemed MUCH easier to go slower on whereas the Ultra seems like it is "faster" in the box and some of the clutch control stuff. I'm not sure of the exact combination of sprockets yet though since I don't want to lose rideability on the street either.

Had the dealer build my new engine to 103" with 255 cams, Makuni/Kerker PAT exaust & heavy breather on my 2008 road king. Might not be the fastest or baddest dog on the block and it wasn't cheap, but they will warranty the build with the rest of the bike. Hp = 85, and torque = 105 ft/lbs right out the gate. I notice a very big differance and would do it again. The low end torque is VERY noticeable!
