Default Oil Cooler-Do I need?

A search did not come up with much

Anyone install an oil cooler and tell me if it made a difference or not..ie run much cooler

I know on high compression built motors they are beneficial...I am wondering if my stock motor would really get any benefit?

Thanks

All 96" Twin Cam motors should have an oil cooler IMO. It dropped the oil temp on my RG around 30 degrees. Runs at 190 most of the time and goes up slowly to 230 in heavy traffic.

I installed the HD premium cooler.

Hope this helps.

Does it have to have one...no.

Depends on where you live and how much time you spend in the heat. You'll also get opinions that say they are just one more thing that can leak. And I've had one leak.

I have one because I ride everyday in Houston traffic with many days in the high 90's. Yes , it doesn't help with out any air flow, but it does cool the bike off faster when you finally get rolling again.

My final comment....It can't hurt.

I like to wrench on my bike. Also, I was a mechanic for years. So for me, it was not difficult. For the average person, I would rate it a 3 with 10 being difficult. The directions are the typical HD doublespeak. Once you figure them out, the install is pretty simple. The directions actually make it more difficult that it should be. Almost like there is a conspiracy to force people to take their bikes to a shop.

BTW, if anyone has trouble with the install, just PM me and will try to help.

Before you start taking things apart, make sure you have the right tools.

I took mine apart only to find that the new nut to hold down the mounting plate takes, I believe it was, a 7/16 hex key. It's an odd size and hard to find. Even at Sears. I had to order one.

Other than that it was pretty simple.

I am using the premium oil cooler and it helped a lot in slow or very hot days.
2 things I learned installing mine. Use a copper spray to hold the rubber gasket in place if it does not have the peel off, glue side to it. secondly, when installing the cooler start the nuts onto the studs that hold on the cooler before installing the oil lines to the cooler

This is where someone usually says "If it was necessary, Harley would have put them on."

Bull****. Add one.
