You didn't mention it, but the Harley Owners Group (HOG) use to have a provision that if you rented a bike they would refund the amount if you bought a new bike within a year. It might be worth while to check into that. The yearly dues are in the $35 range, sorry don't know the exact amount.
After you rode the Road King, you would have done yourself a big favor, if you popped the windshield off and took the bike back out for a spin. Its a completely different bike like that, and the only touring bike that has that ability. That was the #1 reason I purchased my RK, the ability to remove the windshield and bags to turn it into a different bike. But honestly, I find myself leaving the windshield off all the time now, but leaving the bags on.
