You can almost never use both brakes to their full capacity on a bike without ABS... There are soooo many variables in pavement, trash et.... My 08' has ABS and I would never own a bike this size without it.. It is awsome.. If you have ABS you definetely need to get up to speed and grab both front and rear as hard as you can... I was absolutely amazed that a bike this size stopped that fast and smooth.. Thanks to HD for going with Brembo and ABS...
+1 for ABS
Even when you are paying attention sh$t happens. Better to have and never need, than to need and not have. just my$.02 Glad it turned out ok for you.
ABS is really of no value until you find yourself in a tight spot then the $800.00 cost seems to be a great investment. My RG came w ABS or I would NEVER have spent the money for what I considered ''sissy'' brakes. ''I have 49 yrs riding experience and was as good as any fancy system.'' I was bad wrong. If available all my future bikes will be ABS equipped.
After my overnight analysis on my "near miss" incident yesterday, a couple of things come to mind. I agree, paying attention is 99% of avoiding all sorts of trouble--ABS is just the other 1% that I had hoped saved me. But even with ABS, the laws of physics still dictate to keep as much as ample distance to properly stop.
The other thing that came to mind is "rider fatigue". I had about 4 hours of sleep the night before and I think also played a factor with my reaction time.
Amen for ABS, it's one of the main reasons I bought the model. After my first abs event, I thought my heart was going to explode. I won't own another bike without it.
Was traveling on a two way road at about 35MPG, glance over to the left for just a few seconds--then wham...saw two car going on full stop, tail brake lights lit like Christmas tree, then I slammed on foot brake and some on front brake...
Felt my foot brake started to pulsate, heard some sort of clanking noise, then I came to a full stop...I felt my heart skipped several beats.
Wow, my 09 Ultra w/ABS, saved my bacon today. I am so glad that I had this on my bike, it was well worth the $795 option the. Infact, even if this option was double the price, I would have still bought it.
