Default Abs

I have a 2017 1200 C with ABS. This is the first bike I have had ABS on. What I am noticing is when I apply some hard braking to the rear it momentarily locks ups and skids. Is this normal? I thought ABS was to cause the brake to pulsate and not grab long enough to lock up.

I have the same model as you, and you are correct with your thoughts about ABS. I've only gotten my to engage once and that was with really hard braking on both front and rear brakes when a cager pulled out in front of me from a side road, to which the bike did not skid at all. Something is definitely not right with the way the brake is functioning.

I've had 3 ABS bikes since '93 and it is definitely normal on slick surfaces like gravel, sand, sand covered roads ect... Hard, high traction surfaces will cause the bike to just stop without the skidding and releasing. Practicing hard braking on various surfaces will leave fewer surprizes when it matters. Please keep in mind this opinion and $.75 won't get you a cup of coffee in most places these days (it ain't worth much!).

My experience with the lockup’s are on paved (asphalt) roads. When the momentary lockup occurs I quickly release the brake. I am going to find an empty parking lot and apply and hold the rear brake to see what happens.

Unfortunately ABS promises a lot, but delivers it in a strange way! I've only had one bike with it and it never activated in all my time of owning it. I've had several ABS cars and it doesn't behave the same way in any of them.

It does not matter what you have for brakes. Experience with YOURS is what will keep you out of trouble. Learn the idiosyncrasies of your ride, so your control is second nature in a pinch. You don't have time to think.
The front brake does most of the stopping, and the more weight that transfers to the front in a hard stop, the less traction you have in the rear, and the more likely it is to lock up the rear.
Practice and learn. Your life depends on it. I personally think anyone who wants to ride a street bike should learn first on a dirt bike.

Don't know about the 2017 Sportster, but older Harley's I test rode had very clunky ABS. It definitely wasn't the quick pulsing BRRRRT like automobile ABS it was more of a Bang, Bang, Bang...... Especially the rear wheel. Felt like the rear wheel would momentarily lock then release.

I've tried the brakes hard on my 2019 several times and haven't felt the ABS kick in and haven't locked the tires. So maybe the MoCo is figuring out how ABS should work.
