I have found oil a couple of times around the front motor mount. The first time I noticed it was after I had washed it at the local car wash on low pressure. The engine was still pretty warm when I washed it. I brought it home and then put it on the lift to clean the spokes and whitewalls. I figured putting it on the lift might have caused some oil to leak out because the bike was still pretty warm. The second time I noticed it was again after taking it to the car was just after it had been serviced. This time I wondered if was left over from a poor clean up after service or again car wash related. I don't see it anywhere else. Just around the front motor mount. I think it's coming from the oil filter but I'm not sure.
Another possibility is the mainshaft seal. I thought I had a shifter seal going because I had tranny fluid leaking. It would leak from behind the primary in the area of the drain plug. After ZI switched to gear or for the tranny I could smell the fluid and knew it was from the tranny. When I looked in the area of the shifter where it goes into the trans I could see the build up of oil and dirt. I figured it was the shifter seal. It ended up being the mainshaft seal. Ended up tearing it down and replaced the front pully because some have a tendency to get loose and help create the problem. My guess is it will be either the shotfer seal or mainshaft seal. If you pull it apart just replace both as I did. No problems since.
If it's the inner primary seal go ahead and replace the bearing and inner race while your in there. Only adds about $20.00 to the job,You have to pull the bearing to get to seal.
i think thats my problem...any idea on amount of time to fix it?
I would say 2-3 hours as stated before. It's been a while since I did mine but I think parts were under $100. You will need trans shifter seal, trans shaft seal for primary side, starter shaft seal,o-ring for stater end of primary, primary cover gasket and derby cover gasket.
You will need a a 1/2 driver breaker bar, maybe a cheater bar, some sort of wedge when removing comp. nut and clutch nut. I used a piece of 1/4 flatstock to wedge between the 2 sprockets. Clutch nut is left hand threads. Nut sure of socket sizes (can't remember). Snap ring pliers, red loctite and a torque wrench. Other tools will be just basic hand tools. If you don't have a service manual now be a great time to get one. Socket sizes are in service manual.
