problems with a Evo
well i decided to have it rebuilt to hopefully stop all this oil leaking. my question is after all this work is completed, bored cylinders,5000 over, new pistons, rings, new tappet lifters, new umbrella valves, valve job,new gaskets all around,i upgraded to the andrews ev27 cam,new plug wires. and lots of misc other things that need to be completed, is this bike going to continue to leak oil out of the crank case breather tube ? i under stand it should be good for another 50.000 miles with regular maintenance. I sure hope so. Thanks for every ones help.
and its leaking again out of the crankcase breather tube.the filter fills up and leaks quite a bit of oil. the oil lite went on today,i still have 20 lbs of pressure according to the guage, but when the engine gets hot i only get 16 lbs of pressure. yes i checked the oil level, its fine. any ideas ?????
Your oil pressure is fine, when cold the pressure will always be higher then when the motor gets hot, the oil will thin out a little. As for the oil leaking out the breather, when the motor was apart did then do anything with the breather gear, was it replaced? It might be out of alignment with the cam & pinion gear if so that would create more problems, also Harleys always seem to mark there spot so to speak out the breathers, its because of the air being pushed into the cases on the downward stroke and the way the engine is lubricated. The ultimate cure is new rocker boxes by TP Engineering, call the TP Pro Vent. Not cheap but very effective at eliminating engine blow by, next would be "the fix" by Hayden enterprises. a lot cheaper and they work (i have used them on all my bikes) as well as a crank vent, again either Haydens, spikes or doherty myst free fix. The other thing that should have been checked during the rebuild is your pinion shaft runout, Ideally it should be .001 or less, at .003 the flywheels technically should be rebuilt/retrued. Again Expensive...but worth every penny if you are doing the whole motor anyway. Less vibration, less wear on all the lower end parts etc. Hope this helps a little anyway...I would go back to who ever rebuilt the motor and start there for answers...

You checked the oil but how? Should be on it's side stand and checked at operating temperature if the stock oil stick had a swivel or upright if the stock oil stick was a rod-type; I mention "stock" in case it was changed out for a chrome do-dad and the style got mixed. IMHO I would suspect the carb. Does it make spitting or farting sounds? Is it hard starting cold with long warm-up before it runs well? Had problems like this with my '97 which got solved by thorough carb cleaning and tuning; it tended to puke oil into the air box because of gas gunk-clogged slow jet emulsion tube openings. Oil pressure should run between 12-35 PSI@2000 RPM so light could be bad connection or pressure switch and unrelated to what you're experiencing.
If you keep the oil level no more than half a quart low, it will not have as much blow by. Sustained speeds above eighty will cause more blow by also. Running the hose somewhere other than the A/C is the first thing to do. All this assumes there is no other issue, like the breather gear.
hey beemervet, we have the same bike. mine is a efi, i have not taken it over 70 mph so far, also being nice on the rpms during break in. do you also get a lot of oil out of the breather tube ? i just had the top end rebuilt, 38 % leakdown before rebuild, cylinders 5000 over, new pistons, rings, valves, lifters i put the andrews cam in it, its all fricking new. it still leaks, not as much as before. the cc breather tube goes into a filter, mounted on the bottom of the frame it fills up and leaks. the oil lite coming on is a new thing. i brought it back to the guy who did the work, his answer was he needs to find out why the oil lite is coming on. 30 years as a hd mechanic, is it a normal practice to install a new oil pump when you do rebuild. my patience is running out with these bikes. Thanks JOHN

You might try the "Haden oil fix kit" for that blow by thing.
